Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

Ionizers can remove the smell from the air and replace it with a nasty metallic smell (ozone). I believe your smokes will take on the smell of the ozone which can overpower most smells. I wouldn't chance it. The only good for these devices are removing particles from the air you breath, you won't gain anything as for climate control (temp/rh).

All I can imagine is dust free metallic tasting smokes.

Good for your smoking environment and even ok for the room in which you store your cigars provided they are in an airtight environment such as a quality cabinet or well sealed cooler.

But DO NOT put these inside of a cabinet, walk in or other storage container.

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

yes, great for killing the odors in your smoking room, not to mention debatable health benefits but not good inside you humidor, as in "you be friggin nuts to" not good.

great for indoor living spaces for allergy-prone inhabitants of said spaces but be prepared for some serious cleaning when you first implement one. they ionize particulate in the air and these ionized particles will tend to be drawn to glass surfaces like mirrors, coffee tables etc, noticeably so

and I do not agree on the nasty smell comment, I love the smell, smells like lightening/electrical storm, clean as a whistle

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

i have one from air-zone.com in my cigar smoking cave in the basement. i turn it on and let it run for 90 minutes after i leave the room. it's fantastic! there is also a coolerdor in that same room. it's airtight, obviously. i've had no ill effects on the smokes in there b/c of the ozone-inator.

it totally refreshes that room after every use. also it creeps into the rest of the house, which the wife doesn't mind. she never gets a wiff of cigar throughout the rest of the house.

Agree!

The Csonka Smoker Cloakers are great!

But I definitely wouldn't use them in a cabinet or humidor!

Yeah thanks guy I was not clear, I was not intending to put it in with the smokes, I was tired when I wrote the post. I was looking at at air cleaner solution for the Man room! Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

What I mean is that it isn't nasty smelling in a room, but a tight closed in area it is. I leave one (ionizer) in my vehicle overnight every couple months. The next morning the smell is oboxious and overpowering.

Don't want to burst any bubbles, but it seems that most of these air purifiers are bad for your health? See attached link.

You need to run the ozone when you are not in the room and then allow it to dissipate. If you breathe high concentrations of ozone, yes, it will damage your lungs. The warnings in the materials accompanying these products will tell you so. You just have to follow the directions.

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

But you trust that all the ozone will have dissipated? This stuff seems pretty dangerous to me. Why risk it? Open some windows.

Read the first two brief grafs on this respected research group's findings regarding the negative impacts of ionizers and ozonators. The 2nd one, in particular, suggests that the combination of ozonators/ionizers and things like certain kinds of air fresheners (e.g. sprays, mists, even scented candles) can result in toxic molecules being deposited throughout a person's house. I spent some time about a year ago talking with one of the researchers (Dr. Richard Corsi), and he basically said that ionizers and ozonators create toxins that can be dangerous over time, can build up in your system.

The ions released are really chemically reactive. They readily react with many materials in the environment or your body. I've seen examples where certain fabrics disintegrated after exposure. Definitely wouldn't want it near my cigars or my body.

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

I have a friend that gets deathly sick when around one. She found out the hard way. Luckily she was able to return hers. Apparently this is an uncommon side effect, but a possible side effect nonetheless. I don't remember if it was the ionizer or the ozone generator that caused her problems. Being the overly sensitive person that I am, It has scared me away from buying them. But with a convenitanal filter you have to deal with the noise, and I can't stand the noise. Just my worth,

Bill

Re: Ionizer & Ozone Questions...

I wouldnt choose an ozone generating air cleaner in my house, much less so around my cigars. Ozone can combine with the smoke to cause compounded health problems.

I would stick with a standard filter-based unit. Some are very quiet and can efficiently scrub the tars from the air with an activated charcoal filter. The cheap ones at wally world wont do anything. Try a BlueAir unit, I have only heard good things about them (although expect about 500.00 for a high end unit. http://www.blueair.com/products/501.html )

Edit - they also make a "smokestop" filter kit for the above unit that is very effective.
