Looking for a lighter...

I'm a big fan of the old-style lighters, but obviously, I don't want to have to pay vintage prices for an item that might not last, if it works at all. Does anyone know a site where I can find vintage-style torch lighters?

Also, another newbie question...are Zippos acceptable lighters for cigars?

Hey, not sure if I said welcome yet or not, but welcome!

Regarding lighters, I'm not sure what you mean by older or vintage type lighters, but I just did a thread search through the Questions>Accessories thread and lots of good reading came up. Maybe you've already done that, but if not, perhaps you'll find something of use there.

Personally I've used a relatively inexpensive (~$30) Colibri torch, and a more expensive ST Dupont Xtend (~$130-150), and found the Dupont to be worth every single penny with regard to dependability, ergonomics, and for having a rather significant butane capacity.

Regarding Zippos and cigars, many folks here seem to feel that butane lighters, matches, or cedar strips don't impart the taste that Zippos will add.

Re: Looking for a lighter...

for an everyday inexpensive lighter try a
Ronson JetLite Butane Lighter.

There is a discussion here link

Can't offer any advice in vintage lighters.

Give the Ronson a shot (Wal-Mart for $3 and CVS has them for a little more)...

Re: Looking for a lighter...

As far as I am aware, torch lighters have only been around since the 90s. So you aren't going to find a vintage torch lighter.

They make a torch insert for zippo lighers called a Z-Plus. It is a good quality lighter and you can slide it into the zippo shell of your liking. Best of all it will only set you back around $10 (+ a zippo lighter shell).

I knew about the torch lighters being new, but I was wondering if anyone makes a torch lighter that LOOKS like a vintage flint lighter but functions like a torch.

I would definitely go for one of these:

Brand new BMW or an S.T. Dupont Lighter? Tough choice.

Love the Z-Plus and the ability to put it into a classic Zippo shell.

Only downside was altitude. I went to the Sequoias last summer and couldn't get a light at 7000 feet above sea level.

+1 on this...

However, I wasn't aware that they made torch inserts for zippos... anybody used one?

How do they work?

Re: Looking for a lighter...

Z-Plus works decent... Not a large tank and occasional issues (but it is better than a Colibri)

Interesting...I've had several Collibri's and never had any problem with any of them...closest I've come is the Triplex, which has a cumbersome flame adjustment.

I've heard the Dupont Xtend is the best.
