Question Answer: Humi? question....

Hey guys, this is going to be loooong. I'm still a young chimp just curious about something. I went to Spec's liquer warehouse which has a great walk in humidor. I got myself a monti double corona, and it was pretty good, even though I was kinda plugged up (my mistake) went back and got another and smoked it at a party my friend had for her birthday, I was drinking many a beer and was pretty buzzed, dried myself off from the pool and light up my monti dbl. corona
Well it was less than great, and couple buddies and some chick were debating whether my butane lighter was good enough or wood matches were best. I argued for my lighter since I'd learned that on here. anyways the cigar wasn't has tasty and kinda harsh. Maybe I was drunk and smoking it too fast, maybe i was draggin on it to hard. I always seem to have a good smoke when I'm alone just on the patio relaxing and sober(haha). But when I go out to bars or at parties, even if I'm not drinking, the cigar isn't as great as the one I smoked on the porch. these two Monti came from the same shop, same box, just days apart, is it possible I just got a bad one out of the bunch? I make sure to pinch it all the way down, look out for soft spots and mold or such. Just curious if anyone else has experianced this, and maybe if I just get a humidor I could let my smokes "freshen up" or what not. I usually buy them and keep them in a plastic zip lock I get from the store. place them in my empty wooden draw till I smoke them. I usually smoke em in the next week or so.

Cigars only stay fresh for about 3 days in a plastic bag, 5 on the long side.
The less outside stimuli (distractions) the easier it is to focus on and enjoy the cigar.

I agree with Bruce that a week is too long to leave your smokes in a ziploc. Also, it might depend on what you're drinking. I like red wine with and after dinner, but find that some cigars don't go well with certain wines. Lots of folks here like beer with their cigars, but not me. I find that the flavors don't blend well. Maybe I'm drinking the wrong beers or smoking the wrong cigars. When using wooden matches, as long as you let all the sulphur burn off before holding it to the cigar, it should not affect the flavor. I have found the wax in paper matches to spoil a cigar, so avoid those if you can.

Re: Answer: Humi? question....

I usually experience this problem when I stop at the local shop and take a cigar to work that night and not keep it in a humidor for about 4 or 5 hours. I usually experience a bad taste when the cigar sits out and looses humidity.

I did a test. I took my digital Hygro to my office at work. When I take a cigar to work and leave it out on my desk. The Hygo read 39% humidity at 74 degrees. The cigar sat at this environment for about 4 hours. The cigar just tasted aweful. It was all related to the humidity. If the cigar sat out for a few hours then that is most likel your problem.

Re: Answer: Humi? question....

Hmmm well sounds like the reason I've been having trouble with not liking my cigars is 1:i was smoking them to fast, but I've slowed down a bit. Perhaps cigars get hotter quicker if they've been sitting out?? like a suggestion to that. Sounds like I'll need a humidor to really enjoy a good cigar. I've been smoking Hemi's, Monti Dbl. (DOM), CAO Mx2, Sometimes there good, sometimes not. Wish i knew someone with a humidor. Maybe I'll just smoke my sticks right after I buy them.to see if I notice a difference, rather than letting them sit in my sock draw for days at a time, lol

BTW,
My favorite travel Humi bag is a simple freezer strength zip-lock bag.
Keep it in a dark, quiet corner undisturbed, every few days open it & exhale some warm moist breath air into it, and it will keep cigars fresh indfinately.

Mo...are you saying that the only humidifying agent you use when you use a ziplock freezer bag is your breath?
