Using Climmax correctly -

You know, there were so many thread titles I thought of but decided to play it straight

Anyway, after reading this board, I heard a lot of great thing about this product. So I ordered a couple of the premier sacks to try out. Now I think I am not using them correctly.

My experimental box is a 'Majestic' Diamond Crown humidor. 50-75 cigars. It came with its own Diamond Crown humidifier. With that plus a small round credo type, I have kept the humidity between 60 and 65 with frequent maintenance.

So, when I open the bag of climmax, there is a very small sponge, 1.5"x1"x.5". There is no way this little sponge is going to maintain humidity in this box in the desert. Maybe it just regulates the humidity and is not meant to work on its own?? So I wet the sponge and drop it in there with the DC humidifier. Next day, no change and the sponge is bone dry. I re-wet the sponge. 2nd day, humidity is up 1 or 2 and the sponge is bone dry. I re-wet the sponge. Day 3, humidty is up to 75 and sponge is still a bit damp??

Are the beads supposed to be in the humidor by themselves with just that little sponge? or is it meant to regulate another humidifier. If it regulates, do I need to keep wetting the sponge? Is that why I am up to 75 now?

I appreciate your responses before I ruin a bunch of cigars.

Re: Using Climmax correctly -

Hey Jason,

The sponge is most likely an antimicrobial sponge. I personally like to buy the larger 1" x 3" x 4" 3M brand antimicrobial sponges.

Either way the sponge was included to "fill" your beads.

The beads will continue to absorb all availaboe water vapor until the environment around them is 65% or 70% (depending on the variety you bought). or until they are full. (at which time the humidity will go above their rated RH)

To fill the beads soak an antimicrobial sponge in water. Since the beads absorb airborne water vapor that evaporates from the sponge, you don't need to use distilled water; the vapor absorbed will be pure.

To fill 1/2 pound of new beads in my 45 quart coolerdor it took me 2 fillings of the sponge over 3 days to get the hygrometer up to reading 67%, at which time I removed the sponge. Once the beads were full I have to put a damp sponge in there overnight about once a month provided I don't need to do a reorganization (in which case I add the sponge after re-orgs).

If this isn't clear let me know and I will try to explain it again. My 2 year old is here banging on the keyboard and being quite distracting.

Re: Using Climmax correctly -

Thanks for the reply txmatt.

So the beads are the humidifier. The sponge only exists to introduce moisture to the beads themselves? Since the beads came pre-charged to 68, it didn't take much to charge them the rest of the way. So the beads will be in the humidor by themselves and only adding the sponge when the humidity begins to drop.

I think I got it.

There is a thread here somewhere where sleepyjim??? went into a store & asked if they stocked climmax beads. They looked at him like he was some kind of pervert!

Haha. Yeah, but you should have seen how long I tried thinking of a really clever title. I am dissapointed in myself that I passed on the chance.

ou are well on your way at Climmaxing correctly with a name like "slowhand". Just remember that most people like it a little faster near the end.
