Humidor/Humidifier Question

I've had a humidor, about a 40 ct, that came with a standard small round black humidifier with green sponge inside. I've just been refilling it with distilled water every time its gotten down under 65% and it seems to be working fine. But I keep hearing about people using this 50/50 solution stuff to activate the humidifier. Do I need to use that stuff or is distilled water good enough? Also, since I'm only using a standard humidifier with that green sponge stuff, does it ever get old where I have to buy another one? Thanks.

Re: Humidor/Humidifier Question

Distilled water should be fine, unless you start having issues holding a certain humidity level. PG (50/50) is used to both help achieve a more consistent rh level of 70% as well as add anti-mold properties to the humidifier. People claim that you shouldn't use too much 50/50 solution (maybe about 1 tablespoon per every 3 refills) as it can inhibit the green foam from absorbing water after time (or something alone those lines). I don't believe that the green foam gets old, but they do need to be replaced after a while if they ever get moldy, or just don't hold water like they used to.

Sooo, like many others will probably tell you, you'll be better off in the long run just buying some beads, or the Puck. This takes all this complicated guess work out of it. Simply add distilled water ever couple of weeks, and worry more about what cigar to smoke instead.

Re: Humidor/Humidifier Question

Just used distilled water.

But if you want spot on 65% with no hassles, get the puck at cigarmony.com.

I have one of these and it has always been perfect everytime I look at it.
