BomBay & Co. Humidor?

Was in Bombay & Co. today and noticed a beautiful Humidor on the shelf. It is a decent size desktop with a tray inside and some Beautiful 'Cuban' style artwork on the cover. Is this a good Humidor and worth the $150? Or is it made for them and I would just be paying for a name?

Re: BomBay & Co. Humidor?

I have that exact one on my desk. My grandfather gave it to me as a gift and it's of pretty high quality. The lining, divider and tray are solid cedar, of course, and very nicely fit together. You can't even tell that the rest of the box is made of MDF because it's very nicely veneered and lacquered. It easily maintains a stable RH with the included oasis pucks when you charge them with a PG solution and the 50ct they claim is accurate. It will hold that and probably a little extra without issue. The hygrometer is a POS - you'll need a digital one. The keys to the lock are a little flimsy and the lock is a bit stiff but I never use it.

Only thing to look out for is the price. My grandpa paid $99 Canadian on sale and I think it was even lower around Christmas time. $150 US probably isn't too much for a humidor but that one is frequently available for less in store so shop wisely.

Re: BomBay & Co. Humidor?

While in college I worked at a series of Bombay Co stores, and became very familiar with their manufacturing & quality control standards--I'd strongly recommend you look any of them over *very* carefully, and compare the workmanship of the one you want to buy with a CAO or Diamond Crown at a local B&M. The Bombay humi may in fact be one of their well-made pieces (they had a few), but that company's products come from a wide variety of sources, some of which made shoddy product. Again, not to lambast Bombay nor suggest that others' experiences with said humi aren't great, but humi's aren't Bombay's bread'n'butter business, so shop carefully.

I like the design and finish on this humidor, but I hardly ever buy anything from Bombay because I don't like their craftsmenship. You can buy a very nice Humi for $150.

I may just have someone build me a custom one.....

Material: Wood/MDF/Veneers

While it is an attractive little box - I'd look elsewhere if I was you.

Nice Looking, but not worth $150.00 IMHO.

Re: BomBay & Co. Humidor?

I live near a Bombay, and I saw this when I first got into cigars. It was a nice looking humi, but I could tell it was more for looks than for use. It isn't worth $150. If you can every get it for 1/3 that price, I'd say go for it.

Re: BomBay & Co. Humidor?

$150 is not high for a humidor for sure, but certainly other humis fall into that range, like Savoy ones (subsidiary of Ashton). That being said, it could be a good buy still, but I'd check out the humi in person first.

I like the looks of it. That is why it is abit on the high side. You are buying the Bombay name as well.

However they are not humidor makers and the quality may be not 100%. For $150.00 and for that size you can find the same or maybe even a bit better at one of the humidor purveyors out there.

I saw it in person. It looks real nice, the consruction is beautiful. BUT the seal wasnt as tight as my current one. My small desktop one is almost hard to open the cedar fits together so tightly.

Maye mine is just 'too' tight?

The only reason I would buy THIS humi is becausse of the design on the top. It is also a good construction, but the design is what really lures me to it.

The seal on the humi at the store may have been a little less tight because it's not seasoned. The cedar may swell a little when humidified (don't know this for certain, just trying to help you rationalize).

I think the bottom line for you is that you may be paying extra for the name, and you may find one that's more well constructed for $150 elsewhere, but knowing that, if you have the money and would still be stoked to own it, you should go for it.
