Coolerdor shelves
Thanks to a trade, the CT/Cameroon Crazies, and some singles bought on my own, I've got this crazy mess developing in my cooler. Not to mention that the potential for trying to arrange boxes is looking to present difficulties.
Soo.... it's time to put some shelves in (and get some cedar trays). I should've done this to start with--but I was in a bit of a rush, and just wanted to get a box to put stogies in. Impatience is one of my serious vices. I thought I might go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up some wire shelves that can be cut down to size, but I wondered--how have you guys fastened them in? I was thinking about hot glue and roughening the inside of the cooler up a bit with sandpaper, but I worry that it might not hold... |

Re: Coolerdor shelves
i saw this thread awhile back and had some great pics. do a search in this thread for coolerdor, and find "coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)" and look at reply #68 from DGAR. he had a great set up with cedar shelves using the ribs of the cooler w/out using any type of adhesive.(i think) anyway i need to read it again myself, i just know that i made a note to look at that thread when i was ready for a coolerdor. great info in that whole thread.

Here's a direct link to that post: http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showpos...0&postcount=68
If you have room for more boxes in your coolerdor, you can get some empties from your B&M and use those for your singles (you might want to keep a list of what's in each one to save some foraging time) |

Re: Coolerdor shelves
No ribs in this cooler, so that's not an option. I've got some empty boxes, but they're ill-suited in size to the 'gars. They'd probably work well with the tops removed, though, but that still needs shelves to work out well.

Re: Coolerdor shelves
mine's a mess too-i use box lids w/holes drilled for ventilation for singles trays-some boxes i put in vert instead of horiz, i just cram the empty space w/old cello so they don't roll around-putting in shelves uses up space IMHO-doesn't matter to me what the inside looks like, it's not on display

Re: Coolerdor shelves
I've been going back through threads that deal with this and you might want to put in wood strips or blocks, on the walls first, with epoxy or gorilla glue. Hot glue may also work. You could then lay the plastic wire shelves on top of those. Then you'd have to use cedar trays or empy boxes for your storage.
Seems like alot less work though and just as effective if you just use the cedar trays or the empty boxes. That's how I do it. |

Re: Coolerdor shelves
While we're talking about empty boxes....
Once I get some from a local B&M and condition 'em to the 70%, do I need to keep them open for the sticks inside to get humidity? Or can I keep em shut and latched? |

No need to keep them open. They are not airtight so latch them as you please. ![]() |

Re: Coolerdor shelves
I was looking to avoid epoxy-type adhesives because this is a bit of a post-hoc modification rather than a planned project. In other words, my stogies have no other place to live while if the cooler is being serviced, so I want to keep their time out of humidification to a minimum. That's why hot glue came to mind as a quick-setting, low-odor way to attach the shelves.
It sounds as if maybe I ought to resign myself to a bit of chaos in my current cooler and do a bit better planning for the next. Then the current cooler can be turned over into more of a storage/aging bin where organization and access is less important. |

Thanks for the reassurance! I thought so, but wanted to double check.

Re: Coolerdor shelves
An option, although it might not work for you, is to not have shelves at all. I have my coolerdor as if it were an ice chest, it makes for coolerdor tetris, but that's OK with me. If that's not for you, just get a cheap styrofoam cooler, or anther cooler to store them in while you put in your shelves.
