firesafe humidor

I have a 2 cubic ft firesafe that had an electronic lock malfunction and is going to be replaced by the company. Other than the electronic lock it works fine. They do not want the old one back, so I was thinking of putting it in my garage and using it to store boxes of cigars.

Has anyone ever used a safe for a humi, and does anyone have any tips as far as purchasing spanish cedar and an external hygrometer for it. I did a search in the forums and could not find anything about using a safe for a humi.

Thanks...Rob

I think if the seal is good and there is no smell then you can consider using it to store your precious smokes. I personally haven't seen this done before but there is always a first. You would probably need to have empty cigar boxes or line it in order for it to function properly, IMHO. The one advantage I see is that you can lock them up and keep them safe that way.

I've got a nice safe that would work perfectly, it's about 3' x 3'. The only problem I see is that I recently painted it, and now it smells like oil based paint... I would never put smokes in it now. Good idea though, as long as there is no smell, I would try it. Let us know how it works out if you do.

Re: firesafe humidor

i was planning on lining it with cedar and putting in afew cedar shelves. But because it will be in my garage, and I live in SoCal I was concerned about temp. There is also a small hole in the door where the electronic lock was, and I was thinking about running the sensor from an external hygro through that and then sealing it somehow.

I'll probably get started on it within four weeks when I get the replacement safe.
