Colibri help please.....

I just found my old Colibri lighter. It hasn't been used in about 6 months and has been in the cold garage for about 1.5 months. I filled it with butane, and hit the button. All I get is one quick flame, then nothing just sparks. If I let it sit for a few minutes I get one large flame then nothing again.
I have tried different settings with the flame and still no go. I have also tried to light it with another flame and nothing, I cant hear butane coming out when the button is depressed.

Re: Colibri help please.....

Mine does that when the lighter is too cold (I've been relegated to smoking in my garage until it gets warmer outside!). I think that the butane must contract and not be strong enough to keep the flame going. When the lighter is warmer, it works just fine.

Hope that helps.

Re: Colibri help please.....

i've had the same trouble w/cold lighters-assuming you let it warm up after you filled it, try purging it (bleed it dry by pressing in nozzle at btm w/pen)-turn adjuster down to low-fill & wait 5 min-hopefully this helps

Take it into the house and let it warm up some. I would purge the lighter of any fuel you have in it and then be sure only to use a good fluid that is triple refined or better like Lava or Vecor.

If you do the above you should be good to go.

I've been having a similar issue with my colibri. After 5 yrs or so of flawless service, it no longer wants to work. Cold or warm, purged or full. i am getting a spark but no flame. I finally realized that the small o-ring seal in the flame adjustment was shot. Not really sure if its worth fixing.

I'm with the rest, warm it up and then purge it before you refill it... Also make sure you are using good fuel.

I let it warm up almost 24 hours, bled and filled it 5 times, blew out everything 3 times still nothing. I am hoping it is the crap Ronson fuel.

In addition to the other recommendations, I would also get a can of oxygen, the kind used to clean computer parts etc. It is pressurized and lets out a good blast of air. Use it to clean out the burner area of your lighter. You can get em at Staples or Best Buy etc.

I thought Colibris had a so-so reputation on these boards? Maybe time to get a new lighter?

Tried that and still haven't gotten anything more than a short flame for roughly a second or two.

Re: Colibri help please.....

Go for a better fuel than the Ronson... Or pick up a Ronson lighter at Wal-Mart (I think CVS has them as well for more $$)

The Ronson lighter seems to work just fine with the Ronson fuel.

I have 3 colibris and they work just fine. I think the type of fuel used is important though. It has to be refined multiple times (4 or 5). There was a discussion in here a couple of months ago about this. Fuels like Lava, Colibri etc are the best to use becauise they burn cleaner and have less clogs.

Re: Colibri help please.....

Working in the cigar shop here, I find a lot of time that happens when there is gunk/lint in the lighter (the part where the fire comes out.) We have a can of pressurized air that I use to blow the lighters clean..and most of them work great after that!

Something to try at least...it shouldn't hurt anything at least.

Good luck with the lighter.

Re: Colibri help please.....

I had the same problem with my colibri cigar I lighter. It would light up at first then die after a couple seconds and I would have to wait a couple min for it to work again.

What worked for me was to adjust the flame to make it higher than normal. Use http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...hlight=lighter faqs on how to do it. It has been working great since I changed it.
