Bead recharging question

When the beads start to turn too white and you want to recharge them, is putting a shotglass of water in the humidor overnight an effective and acceptable way to do it?

Will the beads absorb the excess humidity as fast as the water will put it out, or will the humidity rise too much in the humidor?

Re: Bead recharging question

I would think that the beads would keep up with the evaporation of the water. It would be a slow process to recharge the beads this way. A quicker way, as I'm sure you already know, would be to spray about 65% - 70% of the beads with distilled water and be done with it.

Re: Bead recharging question

I did that to initiall charge them, and it caused a lot fo them to crack, which is now filling my humidor with bead chips.

I was just looking for a way to do it that wouldnt create this problem

Re: Bead recharging question

I use filter bags that I get at PetSmart. You can also get them at Heartfelt Industries. Pantyhose also work. Get a small spray bottle and use that. The beads do not crack as much and the small cracked pieces stay in the bag and not in your humi.

Edit: Heartfelt use to sell bead bags but I can't seem to find them on the site. I may not be looking in the right spot?

Re: Bead recharging question

I'm using the tube sold at Heartfelt. I'll have to try a bag and see if that works better. I like the tube though becasue it fits in with the cigars so nicely.

Re: Bead recharging question

Somebody wrote to take them in the bathroom with you when you shower. The steam would recharge the beads. Still trying to figure out if they where joking. I just spray with a mist bottle.

I would guess you could find some type of mesh bag at a craft store?

Re: Bead recharging question

I use paint strainer bags that painters use on their spray machines.
You can pick them up at any paint store.

Re: Bead recharging question

I use the tubes in my humidors too and you're right, they do fit in well with the cigars nicely. I have had problems with the pieces cracking and getting into the humi. The spray bottle seemed to cut it down a bit with less cracking. It is a bit of a pain and every now and them I just wipe them out of the humi. and shake the tube when I refill it. The bags really do work great though and the ones I get at PetSmart are very "fine" and keep everything in the bags.

Found the mesh bags in the beads section at Heartfelt. Thanks

Re: Bead recharging question

I just got some beads not too long ago in the tubes (my preference - I like how easily they fit in with the cigars as previously stated) and when I recharge them I spray them and haven't noticed any cracking yet. When I first got them I did roll them around for a while to get all of the broken pieces out of the tubes, but as I've said I haven't had any cracking yet while spraying them.

Good luck!

Re: Bead recharging question

really, this is probably the safest, surest way of recharging the beads, it just takes a long time. The beads should adsorb the water evaporating without any problem unless you put a shot glass of boiling water in there or something.

Did you spritz water on them with a mister/spray bottle or did you pour water on them? Heartfelt recommends spritzing them as pouring distilled water directly on them will cause them to crack. They will still be effective, just messy as you already have seen.

Re: Bead recharging question

I have three of the beads in tubes and I have recharged them by removing the cap and s-l-o-w-l-y adding a teaspoon (or more) of distelled water until about 60 or 70% of the beads become clear. So far I have had no problems with cracking the beads.
