Wine-idor Tapered Lining! (Learn from my mistake)
Just an FYI for those using cedar shelves instead of the metal ones issued with a wine cooler. I'm not sure about other models, but the Edgestar 28 bottle cooler is not the same width in the back that it is in the front! It tapers in 3/8" of an inch from the door to the back, which I was too stupid to check before building all the shelves. If you're just sliding plywood in the provided slots, it won't affect you.
However I decided to get complicated and buy ball bearing drawer slides like those used in cupboards and desks. Unfortunately in a moment of stupidity, I just measured the steel trays and the front of the cooler, and didn't measure the back. After building the trays, seasoning them for days, and then receiving the shipment of drawer slides, I came to this sobering realization. So now I have to find a way to neck down wider portion of the taper so that I can install the drawer slides, because even if I taper the trays, obviously the slides will not work. And yes, the lining is too thin to plane down, I already checked. And to think I used to call myself a carpenter! It's been a humbling evening. |

Re: Wine-idor Tapered Lining! (Learn from my mistake)
I learned that lesson the hard way, too...but I wasn't stuck with quite the situation as I wasn't using sliders; I just planed the planks down ever so slightly and slid them into the existing plastic slots. Sorry to hear about your troubles...

I was hoping to the same thing in my next upgrade thanks for giving us all the heads up on something to look out for when buying a wine cooler.

Re: Wine-idor Tapered Lining! (Learn from my mistake)
I almost made this mistake but I noticed that the metal racks would kinda wobble side to side in the front so I measured. Sure enough mine was about the same. So I tapered the shelves and slid them into the slots.
Heres a question for others who have made shelves for wine coolers. Did you drill holes or leave slots in the wood for air flow? I made mine so there is about .5 inch in the back and the wood I got was too small to make a shelf so I had to double up the wood and use scrap to hold them together so I left another .5 inch slot between the 2 boards. This way it should be easier for the air to flow. |
