Digital Hygrometer way off

yesterday in the mail I got my new adjustable digital hygrometer from one of the websites recomended on here. It came with the calibration kit, which I put it in right away and sealed. 24+ hours later, and it is only reading 61%. Is it possible that it shipped that far out of spec? As I said, it is adjustable, so I do not mind cranking up the 14 points to reach 75, but it just seemed so far off.

Anyone else ever have something like this happen? Any idea's on what I should do?

thanks!

well, as long as it works once it's been calibrated, i don't think it's a big deal. i don't think there is any guarantee that it is calibrated or near calibrated from the factory. you may want to check it again in a few weeks just to make sure something isn't seriously wrong.

Agreed, give it a week and calibrate it again to see if it is accurate or off again.

Re: Digital Hygrometer way off

Just some words of advice, in the future, just get a Western Digital Caliber III.

I have nine of them, yes that is right, nine. I am actually in the process of checking all of them this week. I figured I would be home most of the week, why not. I am using a boveda calibration kit and am letting them sit in the bag for ~24 hours.

Here is the list so far:

(2) - perfect 75%
(3) - +1 at 76%
(1) - -1 at 74%

All six are within the +/- 1% RH error.

Six down, three more to go.

I'm having a similar problem with an Accurite I got at Walmart (~$12). I left it in the baggie for ~36 hrs and the highest it got was 67%. Unfortunately, this model is not adjustable. I just put in a different bottle cap and actually measured out 1 tsp salt (previously I think there had been less, as it was a smaller cap). I hope it reads more accurately now; if not, I'll probably return it to Walmart and go for the Caliber III as recommended above.

The adjustable hygrometers work very well once adjusted. They hold calibration well until you replace the battery, but a quick re-calibration and you're set again.

I don't know if you got the hygro from me but if you did and have any trouble I will make sure it is taken care of.

Re: Digital Hygrometer way off

I thought I got a bad adjustable hygro recently from cheap humidors. I wouldn't rise above 61 for 2 days. Dave (is that Viper?)kindly walked me through it and it turned out, you need to hit the set button, NOT the celcius button, and adjust it, then hit set again.

Mine wouldn't rise in the calibration bag on it's own and I needed to hit the set button to bring it from 61 to 74.

Turned out I was within 1 degree, and only needed to click once to the right.

I used my adjusted hygro to calibrate my other 2.

I'm having a similar problem. I have a cheapo hygrometer from Walmart. Salt tested it three times, and all three times it was a consitant 68%. However, now that I got beads in the dor, the humidity is steady at 65%, the same as the beads. The problem comes in that I don't know if I messed up the salt test or my 65% beads are putting off 7% too much humidity.
