lighter fuel and coooler temp question

I just won a Xikar Exodus and was looking at different fuel. Is Ronson fuel just fine? I was reading all this stuff from the manufacturers about how cheap fuel clogs your lighter. Did I pick a good lighter anyways? Got it on cbid for $37. Is the temp of my cigars in my cooler a big concern? My house is usually 75 or under. and never under 70.

1. Say no to Ronson, Say yes to Vector Quintuplus Butane! You can usually get some at your local Williams-Sonoma for $5 or so. I think there's a brand called Lava that people like, too....never used that. I stick to Vector.

2. never had a xikar lighter, but if it works...that's all you need. a lot of people really like the PB207 lighter and if you can swing it, the S.T. Dupont X-Tend. Speaking of ronson, ronson makes a sweet cheap-o lighter you can usually pick up at walmart. my ronson lighter has been just as dependable as my x-tend, thus far.

3. yes, temperature is a concern. too high (near 80 degrees), you're lookin at tobacco beetle issues. too low and well....they're freezing. on top of that, the temperature will have an effect on your RH. 75 is a bit high, you may want to find a dark closet or set up your unit on the floor somewhere to bring down the temp.

I have to agree with the fluid.

Triple refined at the least is what you should be using. If you don't you will be sorry in a few months when your lighter stops working.

Hey, the price was right. Williams Sonoma is less than a mile from my house. $5!!! Found it online for $6.99. I guess this is just as good as ST Dupont fuel or Colibri fuel?

I guess my temp is 73 now. I'm having trouble gettting the humidity up. Its only been a day though. I have 3 boveda packs in a 13 quart cooler. Hope it goes past 60 RH soon?

I've bad experiences with Colibri fuel. I've had 3 different lighters that I used Colibri in exclusively, and they all began to sputter and not light well. Since switching to Vector they all work well and light on the first strike again. Hope this helps.

All my lighters were giving me trouble until I ordered some Vector Quintplus from Cigarmony.com. It worked wonders and they are all back to life now.

I've never had trouble with Ronson. Don't forget to vent your lighter when it runs out. 70 is perfect for your cigars.

Thumbs up Re: lighter fuel and coooler temp question

I have a couple Dupont lighters and for almost a year I used only the dupont fuel. Per the warranty verbiage, if you use anything but their fuel you are voiding the warranty. On a recommendation from a friend at OVTC (Old Virginia Tobacco Company) who is VERY well versed, I started using Lava. It's excellent. Collibri is garbage. (IMO of course) It's also been my experience that pretty much anything Xikar makes is very high quality. I had a cutter that broke about a year after purchase. I had no receipt. I emailed customer service and they asked me to send it to them. Within a week I had a brand new cutter and a complimentary 5 pack of Zino cigars. Top notch company with excellent customer service.

Re: lighter fuel and coooler temp question

why the ronson from walmart available for 3 bucks doesnt get more use is astounding to me. I take the extra cash I didnt have to spend and get more smokes. Now if you want 10 flames coming out of your lighter, then by all means....... but if you can make 1 work, then the ronson is rock solid.

Duck, when your lighters consistantly clog you will likely change your mind about that.

Lighters have an extremely fine gauge tube that travels from the fuel tank to the burner. The inpurities of unrefined butane like Ronson will build up like cholesterol in an artery in that tubing even in traditional flame lighters. Traditional flame lighters are not as sensitive to poor butane as jet flame lighters however they will still have a premature death if you use Ronson.

If you have a torch style lighter, the impurities will burn off in the jet and form carbon deposits (IN ADDITION TO clogging the fuel tubing). These carbon deposits will prevent the proper air/fuel mixture in the burner; the lighter won't fire. It takes just one or two tanks of Ronson to ruin a torch lighter.

If you are using a $3 WalMart Ronson lighter filled with Ronson fuel it isn't a big loss I suppose, but you definitely aren't saving money versus just buying better fuel as you will be throwing the lighter out soon. For those of us that have pricier lighters, it makes us cringe thinking of putting Ronson into them..

When they stopped making Lava for awhile I switched from the old Vector to King. I had clogs with Vector's previous (was it 3 or 4 times refined) butane clogging lighters. I bet the Vector quintuple is good stuff however I have had excellent results with King and it is less expensive. Now that Lava is available again I have 2 brands to look for and can usually get one or the other for around $4 a bottle. I would definitley spend the extra for Vector 5X if I couldn't find either of them..
