Humidor Quality Question

Hi all,

I visited JR's in Selma, NC, on my way back up from Florida. I was looking at their humidors while I was there. I am thinking of getting a second, bigger humidor. They had a wide range of selection. They had this humidor that was glass top and looked very nice. The price seemed low for what seemed like a good quality humidor (it was $75). However, I have seen other similar humidors for $200 and up. What is the deal? Why is there so much of a difference in prices?

BTW, here is the humidor I was looking at can be seen here:

Not claiming to be Humi expert but...

If its cedar lined and seals ok (keep humdity in, kill most bugs and fairly well sealed) then it should work fine.

This specific humi may be less expensive because its width is smaller than most. you would have to lay any stick 7" plus sideways which can be a pain as you fill your new baby up.

Thats what I know. Maybe some of the big dogs will pipe in to help.

Re: Humidor Quality Question

From what I have seen that is about right on the price, I was at my local tobacconist yesterday and I noticed that he had the one you are looking at for almost the same price. I also agree wiht the idea that as long as it is lined with spanish ceader and keeps a pretty constant humidity level once seasoned, I think it would be fine. Maybe some of the other gorillias wil pipe in also.

Re: Humidor Quality Question

None of the humidors that I've bought from JR have worked right for me in the long term. Seemed more like a waste of money.
Bargain Humidors, Holt's, Black Cat (Phila.), Thompson's are where I've bought most of my humidors (tabletop, mini cabinets, travel) and they've been worthwhile.

Re: Humidor Quality Question

I'm not an expert either, but I think the cosmetic beauty of the humidor plays the biggest part in the price. Some of the wood they use on the outside can be incredibly expensive, and I've seen the surface buffed so much that you can see your reflection. Also, custom detail like carvings and artwork can bump it up a lot.
