Humidor air exchange.

Hey fellas. I'm at the point where I'm going to add another humidor. I'm either going to make my own or purchase a large cabinet. My question is, if I do purchase a cabinet, do I have to worry about air exchange? Installing a fan that introduces fresh air at regular intervals and expells ammonia? Or is opening and closing a couple of times a week good enough? Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Humidor air exchange.

I'm the wrong one to advise. Have a medium size cabinet with a Cigar Oasis Plus. Probably open the thing 10-20 times a day. I think you only get the gas over a longer period of time (like weeks or months). I'm sure someone else can help.

Found mine cheap at Tampa Humidor

I built a large humidor and have an air pump force in 16x the volume of the humidor every day. It seems to have made a difference during the past few months. But these things take time to say for sure. I can tell you that if you keep the humidity high enough and always force in fresh air, I cannot hurt. It will expel all built up unwanted gases outgased from the cigars.

Hey, that's a very cool humidor, I hope I had money to buy one, and money to fill it.

Re: Humidor air exchange.

I never have pumped in new air into any of my humidors and my cigars have aged well and tasted great for years.
.
One example would be the Monte Millenium Jar. You can buy these ceramic jars still sealed from the factory with 5 years of age on them. I have had a few of these jars. The one I recently got, I opened it and it was perfectly aged. There was no air exchange going on with this.
.
There are also cigars tubed in aluminum or glass.
.
Just my .02.

just age differently both ways.

Here is what I have heard

With frequent air exchange
=====================
Faster Aging in shorter time

With no air exchange in sealed contained
==============================
Excellent LONG term aging

I cannot speak on which method is better, etc...
Maybe someone out there has tried both methods over a long
period of time.
