Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

When purchasing a new cabinet humi, it seems to take a lot of time to get the humidity up. Has anyone tried using a small room humidifier/vaporizer to speed the process along? I keep hearing that you overwork CO's, and the various methods of boiling water for steam. It just seems like this would work.

Don't use any additional humidity within the cabinet other than what came with it. Relative Humidity of the room the cabinet is in will play a role in the time it takes to season it. You may want to put a humdifier in the room, but it is easy to get carried away and not worth the introducing mold to the room or cabinet. If your room is totally arid then using an humidifier in the room may be beneficial.

Re: Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

Let me clarify a couple of things I left out of the original post.

I mean one of the small "drug store" type vaporizers with only distilled water in it, simply because that would eliminate the need for all the cups of boiling water, and the size of the resevoir. You'd only have to do it once or twice and have the cab humidified in one day.

This info isn't for me, but for the brothers looking at aquiring a new cab. It's just something I've been thinking about but never seen it addressed. So it's really just out of curiosity than anything else.

Although, I do agree with your idea of using a humidifer in the room your humi is kept in, especially winter time with forced air heat. I have not had an RH stability issue since I started doing this over a year ago (for my desktops).

Re: Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

i use a cigar oasis xl plus in my wine coolerdor, and it works very well. it quickly readjusts the rh level after the door has been open a while, and also when the rh drops as the compressor runs.

during the summer months here in nj i'm not sure if i will need the oasis as the humidity stays pretty high. i might only need beads then.

good luck with your new cabinet and lets see some pics when you get it stocked.

I was thinking that a CO would take care of seasoning. How much stress would this put on a CO to bring a cabinet to 70% and maintain initially?

Bob, I like your point about the vaporizor and would like to see more input from some of the other gorillas out there.

I agree that the CO will maintain without issue, this was simply meant to jumpstart a brand new cabinet (not mine, I don't need one).
And you're probably correct, during high humidity seasons, the beads will probably be more efficient (with their ablility to also remove humidity) than a CO.

Re: Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

I would be real careful when using a vaporizer or a home humidifier to speed up the seasoning process. Over saturation could be a real issue. As long as you keep an eye on it you should be ok.

I've seasoned 2 humi's so far and I'm in the process of seasoning my third. In my first two as well as this one, I've used a pastry brush to "paint" the inside with distilled water, it's much better than using a rag or a sponge, in my experience. You must be careful with the "painting" method however. Only dip about 1/4 inch of the tip in the water, and then wipe it on the side of the bowl with the water in it to get rid of the excess. Then you just brush the inside down. I do this once in the morning, and once before i go to bed, for two days. Then I let it sit a third day without brushing. I also put as many water dishes as i can fit inside of it. The more surface area of water the better.

Some folks say wiping down the inside can lead to mold or warping of the wood, but I've never had an issue so far. The main thing is not to go crazy and brush the water on real heavy. I do it just enough that the wood darkens slighty. As long as you don't oversaturate it you shouldn't have any issues.

Re: Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

As many FOG's have said on here... don't rush it. If you are going to invest in a cabinet humidor why would you even risk the potential of mold, warping, messy clean-up?

Now I usually recommend boveda seasoning packets, but it could take a ton of them depending on the size of the cabinet. I would just put in a few bowls of distilled water and let it sit for a week.

I think a small humidifier would just put out too much moisture. Could cause the inner lining to warp and/or crack. Also, if the water condenses at the top and drips down, it could cause water stains and mold growth down the road. Not a worth-while risk IMO.

what about seasong with a Cigar Oasis.. In theory won't it bring the cab up to 70% and maintain it there?

I have seasoned many humis with the cigar oasis. I set the RH up to 72 and throw it in. Small humis usually season in 1 to 2 days ...I have seasoned a footlocker humi and it took a little longer. The oasis does run alot while seasoning but I have not had any problems yet with "over working" it.

Re: Has anyone Tried - New Cab ?

With active humidification you shouldn't have a problem in seasoning the humidor. I let my run for 2 days, loaded it with sticks, and the active humidifier took care of the rest, perfect 67% all the time. With passive humidification, it takes a little more time. I think that wiping or brushing the inside is fine, but when it came down to do it on my investment, I took no chances. Just my
