Blast-from-the-past Friday, I guess.

Sucker's still going strong. 'Bout the only things I'd change would have been starting out with beads, (I found my lack of faith disturbing), and I mighta left out the strips...not really necessary nor did they contribute any measurable benefits, although Palm55s idea about periodic spritzing during the winter months has merit.

With the appropriate maintenance, I can't see where cigars wouldn't be well kept long term in a coolerdor. Using the original boxes as an inner organizer / "cedar lining" seems to be the easiest, most cost efficient method to kill these two birds with one stone.

The tetris method with beads does work great, but everybody loves a project, and your's is a project done well.

Is it full yet? Huh? Is it full? Can I see? Can I?

I'm planning to start one soon. Is there anything I need to look for when buying a cooler? Should it have some sort of seal on the lid? What about a clasp?

They already have a seal on the lid. Clasp isn't really needed. A portable fan, Oust e.g., seems to be a nice touch. I prefer unvarnished cedar slide lid boxes by El Rey del Mundo to store cigars in. Most B&M's have them for one or two dollars each.

Great looking coolerdor. When are going to get filled up and start a new one?

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)

I've got a small cooler at home that I think I'm going to convert into storage for cigars. I've enjoyed reading your suggestions here. I work right next door to a cabinet shop, so I think I'll hit those guys up for some scrap cedar, if they have any. Is there any other wood that would be suitable for my coolerdore?

Also, do I need to get the beads for this, or could I use the humidifier tubes from my local tobacconist? Would one work as well as the other, or is that just not a good idea?

I'm new to this, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Be sure to use only spanish cedar and any humidifier will work but if you want stable and reliable humidity, go with the beads. Good luck!

Make sure that it is Spanish Cedar as other form of cedars are aromatic and could infuse your cigars.

I say get the beads. I have two coolerdors set up one for boxes and ones for singles and use beads in both. Keeps the RH right where I want it with very little maintenace so far.

Will do, thanks. I'm sure the local shop has what I need.

Only spanish cedar, huh? The cabinet boys might have some trouble with that. Wonder if the tobacconist would hook me up with a few pieces of that, too.

You really don't need the cedar. Just put some unvarnished cigar boxes in there to store the sticks. That will be the cedar. Your tobacconist prolly has boxes for sale. See galaga's post above.

Yeah, they've got some boxes for sale. I was just thinking the guys next door might give me some scraps if they've got it lying around.

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)

As NCRM said, cedar is not really necessary. All my boxed stogies are kept in their boxes right in the cooler. The singles in the other coolerdor are kept in tupperware trays for organization and are just fine.

I dragged out an old 48qt igloo cooler that had to be nearly 25 years old...gave it the flashlight test....tossed in my cigar oasis....then some empty boxes...finally introduced some sticks and it worked like a charm. Only thing wrong was it was to darn small. Bought a new bigger one....now it's to small. Is their no end to this slide?

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)

If you have a woodcraft store near you, they usually stock spanish cedar. I personally like the cedar in my coolerdor. You can see mine in this thread Here. Again not necessary but....
