Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
How to set up a coolerdor:
Step #1: get a cooler. Rinse the inside with a mild unscented dish soap and allow to dry/air out for several days. * Step #2: Decide on and acquire humidity source, (I chose a Cigar Oasis from Cheap Humidors since I'm gun-shy about passive humidifcation right now). Step #3: Cedar strips, (from empty cigar boxes, courtesy of the local cigar shop and Mrs. ScottM), applied to sides and lid. Cedar planks, blocks or pieces of old cigar boxes can be substituted. Step #4: Let stabilize until humidity is at 65-75%. Step #5: Blow paycheck on preferred filling: (Picture Under Construction: Check Back Later!!) Any questions? This concludes your freshman level course on coolerdors. 600 and 700 level courses are offered by more senior members of this board. Please consult the search function for details and course requirements. Scott"workingtowardtenure"M *- Go big or go home: this is a 48qt cooler. As you can see, I'm already thinking it's gonna be too small.

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
What did you use to adhere the cedar to the cooler?

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
Great post. The only thing that I would add to it is how to stick the cedar on the sides( I use double faced tape but I would like to see what you used) Also I prefer the humidity beads to the cigar oasis, they work just aswell and ar cheaper. I am poor guy, so less I have to spend on humidification the more I am able to spend on cigars. Again this is great post. You have done an excelent job. I am sure this will help out a lot of gorillas here.

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
Thanks. I used double sided tape for the cedar strips. I may have to go back and either use more than one strip of tape per strip of cedar or find another way to adhere them to the walls. Dunno...worse come to worse, I'll just stand them up against the wall! ( A little revolutionary humor...sorry). Tought about beads. It's a good idea, but I wanted a "fire and forget" set up with some circulation. Saved some lunch money for a bit and viola!
Since this thread is pretty much a bandwidth killer, and for instructional purposes only (PI flashback), feel free to post some pics of coolerdors if ya' have some. Scott"broadbandrocks"M

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
Great job Scott,I want the cigar oasis too but I'm just using a large humidifier from JR's that does well. I have the beads on order too.

Great Post Scott & Floyd. Doing something similar with an old beer refrig that broke.

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
Okay, so I'm getting ready to set up a coolerdor and I just want to know if it's possible to keep cigars in the coolerdor forever (with rotation of course and stable rH). I'm planning on keeping boxes inside instead of just putting cedar on the sides. This thread was a great help. If I start one now to age sticks, can I keep them in there for years?

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
Great theory, and great practice, Scott!!!
I did the same with a smaller cooler... But instead of 2-sided tape, I used male/female patches of velcro (affixed with "Goop" to the cedar and cooler interior)... With our extremely low humidity here during the winter, I take out a cedar panel, give it a spritz of distilled water, replace it, and let the bead tubes do the rest. Interesting what measures we take to keep our cigars in the "comfort zone." Wouldn't it be nice if WE were afforded similar care!!?? |

Re: Coolerdor 101 (56k Hostile!)
ScottM:
Try velcro. You can get it from Home depot. They come in two packs, 9in the HD near my house). The backs are coated with an adhesive and will stick to just about anything. BTW, great post, very useful. Thx Go Terps! (next year)
