Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

I'm a new guy just starting out, both with cigars and Club Stogie.

<--- I'm nearing more posts than sticks or smoked sticks.

So, naturally I'm looking around for humidors. I'm starting on the net with the usual suspects. Links posted CS, google searches, ebay, craigslist, etc. B&M trip. Though I have a trip to a bigger/better store coming next week.

Well it occured it I don't much care for the look or feel new humidors. The printed laminate, shiny gloss and that goes with it. So I started looking at vintage and used/modern humidors. I'm liking what I'm seeing as far as style.

The more I think about it, the more I start worrying about seals. Especially the old glass ones. Though I am on the hunt for a big mason jar now

I'm also seeing some metal lined ones. If you ask me metal + constant moisture + cigars (or tea) = BAD NEWS.

Anyone have any thoughts or advice on vintage/used humidors?

Example:

Old wood: http://tinyurl.com/ysd3kp
Old Glass: http://tinyurl.com/2cl2ps
Furinture: http://rochester.craigslist.org/fur/354176675.html

Lets leave any "that seller is an idiot", "it's a fake", "that can't be real" such stuff out. These are type/class examples, I haven't had time research the actual items.

Thank you for any input.

Re: Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

You probably don't want to hear ...get yourself a great, big cooler! Right?

Personaly, I would go with a new humidor from a reputable dealer. There are so many makes and models in all price ranges. A reputable vendor will most likely have some kind of warranty if you are not happy with your purchase.

Re: Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

i've seen some old ones lined w/milk glass that are pretty cool IMHO-if you don't like the laminate/veneer thing, there are better quality ones available for a reasonable price-they're usually advertised as solid hardwood construction, not just spanish cedar lined, $200 for a 100ct box-try cheaphumidors.com, humidorcentral.com, i'm sure guys here could recommend some others-hope this helps

Re: Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

I like the style of the furniture one, although the copper interior is a risk, IMO.

You might like something like these, if you like that style:

http://www.cigarmony.com/store/produ...roducts_id=699

Of course, they're new, but I think they fit that schema pretty closely.

Good luck with your search!

I would suggest that you might consider contacting "xrundog". I see that he is listed as a member on this board. It is my understanding that it is his hobby to restore vintage humidors to pristine condition. He then sells them, or trades them for cigars of like value, according to the rules of the forum he posts his offers on.

I should say that I am not shilling for him. I have never had any contact with him, either in PM exchange or in general posting correspondence. I have merely admired his work and often considered procuring one of his restored humidors for myself. He posts pics of fantastic looking humidors and the people I know of who have acquired them have expressed complete happiness with them. "xrundog" is a member of several cigar boards, if you are unable to contact him from here.

Re: Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

Nothing to comment on what type of humi to get, but just a quick pointer... Never trust anyone who tells you something from 1915 is victorian.... it's Georgian (Victorian finsihed 1901, Edwardian finished 1910) But you didn't want comments like that

I'm sure it would work perfectly well, but I agree on the sentimant get something new... something with a warranty if it don't work right.

I will contact him here to see if he has anything else in stock.

Lumpold,
Thanks for the info. IIRC 1915 would put that item into WW1 or "Arts and Crafts Period"

For those following this thread. This is a SWEET looking box:

Yes, I've admired your work from afar. This is the first post of yours I've seen on this board, and I must admit, I almost didn't "recognize" you without the cigar chomping sailor avatar.

Re: Vintage, Used, or New Humidor

There are xrundog's boxes currently. He was kind enough to show his current stock me. I'll pass it along to you:

http://galleries.cigarweekly.com/xrundog/Trade-Humidors

Well, after a trip to the local B&M today, it appears I will be getting both a new and a vintage humidor. My local is trying to get rid of all, but a few humidors. So I got a normaly $120 for $40. It a good looking box by a local artisan, solid wood good seal.

Friday I should be completing a deal on a cabinet/humidor (looks like a small end table) for $20.

Thank you for the advice. I'll post pictures of the boxes when I get my hands on a decent digicam.
