Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

Last night I tossed and turned and thought about my box of RP Connecticuts that were one their way. I contemplated their space in my home and how when the boxes start coming in joined by samplers and sleepers, where will they go?

Then it dawned on me, even though the sun wouldn't be up for 3 hrs... the music cabinet.

I have (shown below) a music cabinet that is not being used by music at all. It chills out next to my wife's sewing sundries and basically holds a gaggle of assorted things, besides my desktop humi and my cigar caddy.

So the plan is to pull out the shelves inside and build a humi INSIDE the existing cabinet. Basically, the new humi could stand alone as a rectangular box that slides into the cabinet's full space. It's a brilliant idea but it's just the beginning.

How do I make the humidor?
What materials do I use?
What should the layout be inside?

DIMENSIONS (inside, i.e. Usable Space): 23" Tall x 12" Deep x 15.75" Wide

I have access to my dad's huge woodshop in his basement, so I'm not lacking on tools...

And sooner or later, I'll start a cooler-dor for heavy use, but this would just be spiffy!

HIT ME WITH YOUR IDEAS!

Re: Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

You have access to the tools. You have access to the knowledge.

Two big questions
Do you have the time? Do you have the skills?

If the answer to the questions are "yes", you are on your way. If either answer is "no", drop the $$$ on a professionally made cabinet. Aristocrat and Avallo are two top-knotch makers of cabinet humidors.

I WILL have the time after I get back from Cali in August. The answer to both questions is YES. Living in a house with a dad who can build/fix anything came in handy for learning my way around woods and power tools. ..power tools.... Not to mention, he said he'd love to work on the project with me.

Re: Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

I would ask an additional question to those asked by Peter: Is this an old cabinet, heirloom or antique? Will converting it to a humi cause ANY discontent with your better half, or other family members if this is an heirloom? If so, it isn't worth the emotional issues involved to convert this cabinet.

If there isn't any antique/heirloom issues, then go for it! Find you some spanish cedar for a lining, do some fancy woodwork to create a "sealable" lip around the door (may can be accomplished in conjunction with the cedar lining), consider installing some electrical capacity (for a small light, and for a humidification system), and you should have the makings of a good starter cabinet. Then, in 6 to 8 months, you can upgrade to a cabinet three times this size, and have another project to test and hone your woodworking skills! Just remember, Bigger is Better, Too Big is Just Right!

Good luck, sounds like a great project in the making.

Actually, the cabinet is mine personally and nothing of hers is in it. So on that front, we're good. she's just worried I'll spend too much money on cigars!

Also, don't worry, the humi will have a door of its sealable door inside. I'm thinking I'll make a box-style stand-alone humi that can slide into the cabinet. I like the idea of the light in there...

Re: Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

I dont have all the tools to do this.

You also need a good space to leave it in while working on it. This is not a two day project.

If you do it, good luck. Nothing like looking at a product you put together in the years to come.

Re: Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

14" by 12" doesn't truly sound like it will hold many boxes. Have you done the math to see how many you will be able to fit in there?

Not a criticism at all, it is a very cool idea....just seems like a lot of work if it will only hold 8-10 boxes.

Aye it's not that big, but the cooler-dor will be for space. This is more for a functional piece of furniture transformed from an existing piece that's just hanging around. That and I get to use power tools.

I wish it were a bigger cabinet, but I suppose it's also a good size because the wife won't freak out and think I'm spending all our money on cigars (which she's deathly afraid of).

Re: Make My Own Humi Brainstorm!

Looks like a great project but you may be better off building a humi that is a self contained box that can slide in and out as a unit to protect your sticks and the cabinet. You will lose some space but it will be worth. The inner cabinet will seal and you won't pick up the sheliac or varnish smell in from the inside cabinet finish once you introduce moisture for your humi% >We used to build them in custom boats that way to protect the cabinetry and the contentsGood luck with the project

Sounds very cool regardless, surely a great conversation piece.
