Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
way WAY too high. Aim for around 65-67. 70% RH is really the maximum humidity level at which any cigar is worth smoking in my estimation (and I think most BOTLs will agree)

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
What's the ambient RH? If it is below 70% open the humidor. Don't worry about the temperature it is not important.
Why do you think it is so high? _____ rm

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
i honestly have NO clue why it is so high. i started my humi last friday with a little wipe down with distilled water. i then boiled a cup of d. water, left it in the for 24 hours. sunday night i added the first batch of stogies. my analog hygro reads 60% which i know is crap. i bought a digital and its like 75.3% and 68.5* F

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
What are you using for humidification? Like RM suggested open the humi untile the humidity drops to 65-67%.

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
The method you used to break in your new humi are fine, the problem with boiling water is it creates a very humid enviro that could last for several days before it will recede. Give it another day.
Make sure your humidying media has some 50/50 solution and is not saturated so it can absorb the extra moisture and regulate the humidity to somewhere between 65 and 70%. I wouldn't worry here because usually the problem with new humis in the first few weeks is low humidity, not high. It takes a good 3 to 4 weeks before that humi will start keeping a steady envirornment. The swings in between won't hurt your cigars if only for a few days. Patience is the key -- They will eventually get there.

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
I had a similar problem with my first humi. It turns out I was overhydrating my Credo before placing it inside. Once I realized this, I dried out my credo and then poured in just enough water to get it moist but not so much that it puddled once the oasis foam had become saturated. I left it out for 3 or 4 hours to dry a bit and then replaced it in my humi. That pretty much cured my problem.

Re: im running 68* F and 75% RH
I can't remember where I read it, but I think Davidoff or Dunhill preferred their cigars (Cubans) at 72% and was anal at that. Some people think their cigars smoke better at 65%, some at 70%, some have different humidities for Cubans or NCs. 75% for a short time is not a problem. Long term, you increase risk of mold & possibly beetles.
You have a humidor at equilibrium and add cigars the equilibrium changes, if the cigars have not been previously held at the same %RH. If you had a constant 70, added cigars and the %RH increased, the cigars were a bit wet. I would recommend that you test the digital using salt, as they can be off by 2-3% easily in my experience. Do a search and find other threads that discuss this. To lower the %RH I would do nothing, the credo should drop the RH in a few days, thats what it is for. Sean |
