65% beads dry in 70% rh
I have 65% beads. I recharged the other day so about 80% where clear and 20% were white. My humidor was rock solid at 65%. About 1 day later i received an "unexpected" shipment of about 15 cigars from a buddy and my humidor RH climbed to about 70% as expected.
It is now a week later and my RH is at about 67-68%. Just for fun I looked at my tube of beads and a majority of them were white? I thought since the RH of my humidor was over 65% the beads should retain their moisture and still be clear?? My digital hygro is calibrated with a Boveda calibration pack as well, so readings are correct. Just wondering. |

Is it a newer Humi - have you light tested the humi?
That is my first thought is your Humi might not be as tight as it could be.

Re: 65% beads dry in 70% rh
Beads are not an exact science like many people think. They are useful at regulating, and good at extruding moisture, but do not absorb it as well nor as quickly. Part of this is because the air immediately around the beads is what they regulate. If air isn't circulating, then if a large amount of dry air passes over the beads, they will lose moisture.
Also remember that beads are an approximate thing: the larger the ratio of space to beads, the slower beads will have a noticeable effect. It will even out after a while, but it may take as much as two to three weeks for the RH to even perfectly. As long as your humidor is running over 65%, I would just keep the air circulating with an Oust fan or something similar. As soon as it drops (which it will) you can re-moisten your beads as needed.
