Buying your first humidor, or thinking of upgrading?

Well i have said this a few times to folks asking for advice: "think of the biggest humidor you will possibly need and, at minimum, triple it."

And just to illustrate my point i refer you to an elder's experience, Bruce5:

Back in 2003 it seems Bruce had been incrementally increasing the size of his humidor:
http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showpos...93&postcount=6

At the end of which he stated:
"I never thought this would happen to me.
I hope the buck can stop here...
while there are a few bucks left."

Wellllllll..... just 1 year later:

http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=7351

Yes indeed, it can, and it will happen to you too.

I give him 18 months before he is showing us his new closet humidor, or 24 months before he is showing us his new wife.

Ya know RM, I remember you giving such wise advice. I thought to myself, self, he's probably right. Then I proceed to purchase a 50 count box.
I am now on the hunt for my 2nd humi and it will not be big enough either! I'll probably be searching for another in a few months, er a,.....weeks.

Fellow noobs..........buy BIG!

Re: Buying your first humidor, or thinking of upgrading?

Thats pretty funny, nice research job.

I've got 2-very full 50 stick humidors with a shipment of sticks on the way. I want to get another humi but I want one with a lock (kid proof) that sits on a desk. It can't be more than 12x12x12 to fit where I want it to go. I'll keep the old humis for extra storage. I'm like most of you, I buy more than I smoke and storage is an issue. I've even used a sealed converted Samsonite briefcase with Oasis and a digital RH gauge for temp storage.

I hope that I don't get to the point where I need a 2000 stick humidor. Althought thanks to Bruce, I did start the slippery slide a few months back and I find myself hitting the "add to cart" button more than I should

Yup!
It sure is a slippery slope (even for domestics).

Nice research. Brings things into perspective.

Well since I have already made this mistake before I found this great forum, I'm sure I will be looking for a new humi in a few weeks. Definately going to buy big this time.

Re: Buying your first humidor, or thinking of upgrading?

Bought an 80-100 count humidor. Thought I'd be good for at least a year. Have had it since December and there is only enough room for about 20 more sticks. The sad thing is I only have about 35 in it.

She is my baby.
I Better not outgrow her.
About 1,000 habanos in there currently.
Got room for 1,000 more.
I hope people do not follow in my footsteps for their own good,
it only gets worse.

Will try to put up a recent pic next week.

I would add this:
"If you know how many cigars the humidor will actually hold, triple your number. If you are going based on how many cigars the humidor is advertised to hold, multiply by 6. And as a lower bound, don't consider anything smaller than a 200-count."

As far as why you will need more? Pretty soon you will:
* Buy samplers to find out what you really like.
* Buy more of a brand you like, even though you haven't finished the samplers.
* Buy 5-packs (even though you've never tried one) online because the price is better than singles in your local store.
* Buy 5-packs because you can't find singles.
* Buy whole boxes because the price was just too good.
* Buy cigars because you're afraid they will run out if you don't buy them now, even if you don't need them yet.
* Finally, you'll start buying all sorts of different cigars because someone on Club Stogie said they were good.

The very same thing is happening to me right now, I though a 250 ct would be enough1?! Not a chance! That is why thereis a new cooler sitting in the floor airing out as we speak!

Re: Buying your first humidor, or thinking of upgrading?

It's all true! I bought a small travel humidor in Nassau in February when I really got bit by the cigar bug. When I got home, I found Club Stogie, and within a few days I bought a 100 count humidor on-line. I then began buying some 5-packs, some singles, and getting a few cigars from some of the gorillas here. Before I had even seasoned my 100 ct., I had ordered a 300 ct. humidor. And now that I am learning what I really like, and want to buy some boxes to keep costs down (some logic, huh?), I know I will need bigger still. I should have just started with a cabinet! Who knew?

Re: Buying your first humidor, or thinking of upgrading?

Buy big. Agreed. The only problem with a BIG humi of course is that if you do not fill it, it looks empty. And the only problem with filling a big humi... $$$$$$$. Now if you enjoy inexpensive cigars or don't have a wife that limits your monthly spending on quality cigars, then you'll be fine. In my case, my humi could hold about 12 boxes, and even more without boxes. Currently, two of my friends are also using my humi to store some of their smokes, and still the humi looks less than 1/3rd full. I have opted to not buy several boxes of cheap smokes just to fill it. So I have somewhat of a dilemma. It also seems more difficult to maintain ideal humidity when the humi is only 1/3rd full. So yes, buy big and grow into it (which is better than the alternative), but be prepared to start spending some cash on the stock that you'll need to keep it full. You'll definitely have incentive to buy more cigars if you own a big humi!!.. which is a good thing, right? Anyhow, just my two cents.

Happy Easter!!
