Use a Pelican 1200 as cigar and pipe transporter

I just sat down to configure my Pelican 1200 case yesterday. It is not quite complete. I want to order a cigar tray from one of our vendors to top it off. So just imagine that on top instead of the spiky foam.

It took me some time to figure out how I wanted to set it up. It carries three pipes now. There are four cavities for film cans that hold tobacco. I need to get myself a fourth can but you get the idea.

In the bottom slot there is a cigar tube; it holds pipe cleaners. You can either will three to four churchills in this slot or use it for the pipe cleaner tube and other accessories.

The pipes sit very firmly. I can turn the case around without them falling out.

Granted, it is not as super nice as the one recently posted but it does the trick. I just wonder how the foam will smell after some time.

Re: Use a Pelican 1200 as cigar and pipe transporter

I fell into a deal on Pelicans two years ago, have a mess of them from i pod sized to capable of carrying TWO scoped rifles.

Take out the foam , leave the case OPEN for several days. Otherwise the foam smell will persist for some time.

I've got some sensitive camera gear in a 1500 or 1550 thats mounted to the back of my motorcycle. I've dropped the bike in the dirt several times with no damage to the camera gear. The Pelicans are one tough case.

Now, that's what I call air tight!

Thanks for the tip on the foam. I'll let it air out a bit more but the smell wasn't too bad to start with.

I like them a lot, too. Got one for a friend of mine to present him with his Boswell pipe for his 70th birthday. He loved it. If they could make them even lighter without sacrificing protection that would be great.

nice work.

we use several diffrent sizes of Pelican cases here at work. We have a bunch of our kits all over the world in the field, and have not had one complaint about them. I work with military and I am retired Jarhead so I know the value of a tough dependable piece of gear.

Note to be a party pooper but film cases are bad news, that are full of chemicales that you shouldn't be smoking...

The orange thing is an inflatable seating cushion on the floor of my living room. There are four of them. One even glows in the dark. They are very thick rubber, quite comfortable and never needed re-filling in six+ years that I have had them. They are my substitute for a sofa which I don't have. It's the Italian design version of Japanese tatamis so to say. They are made by Zanotta and won a bunch of prices. I scored them super cheap because most people found them too crazy. I like them.

Excellent point. I didn't think of that. Now that I do think about it; in principle they are just poly-whatever cases. Similar to tupperware or coolers or the interior of vinos, no? I know they will take the smell of the chemical emulsions on the films but that can be cleaned out.

Do you still think it is a bad idea putting tobacco in those? I haven't yet put any in there.

I bet you could just buy some new ones that haven't been tainted with film. There's gotta be a good way to clean them though ... I just can't think of what it would take.

i've thought about doing this to my 32 count otterbox. great idea and great work on that box. How about using tins or old cigar tubes for backy? maybe small ziplock bags?

Re: Use a Pelican 1200 as cigar and pipe transporter

I'll give them a good cleaning with antibacterial dishwashing detergent and baking soda. And I will make sure to let them air out. Overall I don't think the kind and dose of chemicals would really have an effect. I am not easily scared enough, others would say I am not prudent enough. But if it has an influence on the taste of my baccy I would definitely take something else. I already found a possible alternative. The other day I bought some 2oz nalgene bottles at REI. I use them for shower gel and such when traveling. They are completely tight and neutral. Of course, I could always just use ziplock baggies and roll them up and stuff them in the holes.
