I would recommend at least 12 hours for the salt test. I believe its not just the hygrometer that has to settle down, the salt mixture also needs to level out.

I've had my $25 radio shack hygro for about 5 years now. Works great, haven't even had to change batteries yet. just my 2 cents

I didn't pay that much but I hope I get half that much use out of the one I bought. I have noticed with mine though, that once settled, the humidity readings are gradually rising but slowly though.
Backwoods, I think you have a point, and I decided myself to let it set overnight so it stabilizes.
Thanks for the input guys.

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer

By way of an update: The one I bought has been sitting in it's salt chamber for well over 12 hours now, and all I see is fluctuations in temp and RH as well ;( The test could be flawed (on my part) or, the one I bought from WM is a dud.
On the good side though; my beads came in the mail today So, even if this digital therm/hygrom doesn't work, I'll know my cigars are at 65% regardless.

OK now I have tried a total of 6 of the Wally World hygrometers. All 6 have been off by around 10 pt on RH. I have been buying them 2 at a time and trying them out. Each time I took them back and exchanged them. My wife just picked 2 more up that were tested, WITH THE SAME RESULTS.. This will be my last try with them. I would say DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. RJT

I dont know why you keep having so much trouble. Are you buying the 7 dollar one? I first bought that and it was complete chit so I returned it and bought the 12 dollar one and it read 72 on the salt test. I have it in my 9qt cooler and its working fine.

By way of an update to my update:
I took all of my sticks out of the tupperdor and rearranged them. I also took out the 2 conatiners I have my 65% beadss in, and re-wet them. I changed the location of the dig. hygrometer and voila! The temp is around 69 degrees and the RH readings are at 63 to 69%! So far so good, and it's been about 2 weeks now.

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer

I got the $12 one from Walmart today.

It seems like the people ripping on the walmart hygros are ripping on the $7 ones. I will let you know how mine works out, but I am sure the $12 is a fairly safe pick.

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer

Well, since this thread seems to be the one that won't die, 2 of the 3 I got are still working perfectly. It has been about 3 or 4 months now. The other works but responds slowly to changes. I use that one to keep track of the humidity in my room.

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer

Well I only put mine in my humidor a few hours ago here is how it reads:

63%
High: 71%
Low: 27%

I guess since it hasen't been in there for too long there should be a gap, but that gap is huge.
