Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer
I gave the $6 model a try and it only got up to 56% in 24hrs of the salt test.
I exchanged it last night for the $11 model at Wal-mart and it was sitting at 62% when I left for work this morning. Hopefully it will have climbed by the time I get home. How long does it typically take for the humidity to rise? I'm using a sandwich size Ziploc and have the salt in the clear top from a water bottle. Filled about 1/3 with salt and a couple drops of water to make it damp. I placed an order for 70% beads last week so I may just wait for those to come in and retest using the beads. |

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer
The 11.99 one is spot on, based on my test. I have one of those and three of the 6.78 units, and the biggest difference is that the 11.99 unit senses changes to the environment and stabilizes much more rapidly. All of the less expensive units are very close to actual RH, but they do take longer to stabilize.

I don't have any of the $11.99 units but I have two of the $6.78 cheapies. Just what you said - they are within 1 degree RH of my Western digital hygromoter. They just take longer (10-15 minutes) to sense and give a stabilized reading. Doesn't bother me at all especially for my glass top vicksburg where I can see the reading without opening up the humi. Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer
Mine sat in the salt test for 24 hours and never rose above 61 RH, I'll be returning mine as I await my Adjustable Digital.

Re: $6.78 Walmart Digital Hygrometer
I gave the walmart 6 buck and 12 buck models a test spin.
The 6 buck I gave up on after a couple of days worth of salt testing, it was really inconsistent and would never get over 57!?! So, I went back for the 12 buck deal. Size wise its not too bad so it works fine even in my tinny 20 ct freebie box. Anyhoo, I salt tested this one twice both for 18-24 hours, and this time I used a ball canning jar. Plastic bags are not all that air tight. Get some air in one and then gently squeze on it, my experience showed they leaked slightly and more easily then I thought they would. Anyway, the 12 buck deal got to 70 and stayed there on both tests within 12 hours. So I figure mine reads 5 points low, works for me! Can't beat the price. |

I bought one, just for the He!! of it. Was never really close, drilled the holes in the back, now the RH is spot on with my Western Digital. Temp is still off by 9%.
Using it in the coolordor with 65% beads. Works like a charm. ![]()

also, if all you really need is a tupperdor or similar for just a short time to manage some temporary overflow... it might overkill to have a $20 hygro in it. also, if you are a little OCD like me... I already have multiple remote units in my coolerdors and humis that I use with my weather station... but I also have a small cheapy hygros in each sorta as back up... and I like to check max and min temps and RH at the humi or coolerdor without having to go to where my weather station is. |

Sorry about that I was thinking of trades and splits with him. Two of them in two different coolers. Not a big deal, but I figure I saved $25.00 or so. BTW mine are both off + 3 degrees RH from my Western Digital. I am not in the coolers too often. Once a week or so I will take the digital from my Vicksburg and put it in each cooler for an hour or so to check everything is OK. They have worked fine for about 6 months now for me - I know they have gotten mixed reviews here. Frankly now that I have a better idea how a well kept cigar looks and feels (as well as the pleasant tobacco smell coming from the humidors and coolers, I am not as OCD about the RH anymore). The coolers have proven to me they can hold RH fine. One of the Wally World cheapies went a little berzerk. Changed the batteries and it was back to normal. Cheers, BillyBarue

![]() Who me? I'd say nobody on CS can be trusted in terms of trades. ![]() I rarely open my coolerdors too... I'm a little worried about air circulation but I figure they get some when it gets time to refresh my beads... my cheapy hygros are a little off from my remote units but I figure the beads do a lot to keep the RH side of things pretty even... i use the remote hygro to alert me to the need to rewet (if my weather station shows a RH closer to 60 in my 70RH coolerdors, I rewet)... that's when I look at the cheapy hygros... if they indicate a similar lower RH as well, I'm more at ease... if anything seems hoakie, I'll throw my $20 digi hygro (although, for me, it was $28 at my local B&M) into the suspect unit and try to figure out what wrong... so far things have been good. both the remote units and cheapy hygros are slightly off from the adjustable digi, but not significantly... my cheapies weren't from wallmart tho... two were from Target (I think the same brand... acurite?) and I think one was from Lowes or theHomeDespot... and a forth one... I must be getting old, 'cause I think they came from some garden center at a local nursery but I can't remember exactly ![]() |
