Re: 300 Count Humidor

Ebay offers cheap Humidors but you really get what you pay for...

Pay a little extra and get something legit or go the route of a cooledor.

Most of the Ebay humidors only have Spanish cedar dividers...meaning the dividers that go in the trays.

This is very timely. I was looking at the same humidor on eBay earlier this week and wondering about buying one. I also looked at the humidor in the link listed above. The one for $109 looks like the way to go for me.

Re: 300 Count Humidor

This is what so many of us Newbies are going through.

Bum and 2007 both prolly snagged the eBay Ravello selling for $66.99 under the title:
300 ct Luxury Cigar Humidor blah blah blah...
And Ruger lists one version of the same model Ravello selling on other sites like Cheaphumidor.com

The difference is in the description.
The eBay is very clear, in his totally vague description, stating the following:

Features - only listing whats important.
  • Tray with Divider
  • Lined with Kiln Dried Cedar Dividers
And then under the About section:

ABOUT OUR CIGAR HUMIDORS!!!
In order to provide savings for our customers and get the same value, portions of our humidor interior are made of cedar wood. Once the humidor is closed everything inside is sealed. The cedar smell will remain in the box giving positive effect on the flavor of your cigars. Therefore there is no need to make the inside of the humidor completely of cedar. If you research cigar humidors, there is no 100% cedar humidor. All manufacturers use the same method to make their humidors. The reason our prices are much better than other sellers is because we have our own manufacturer and make our own products. We also sell our humidors to few of biggest retail chain stores in United States and Europe. That's why we get good items at lower prices. We do not buy our products from other middle men and we pass the saving on to our customers. We hope this helps and please feel free to email us with any other questions or concerns that you may have.

So that is totally completely vague and confusing.
If someone could translate that sensibly - Good Luck!

But thats the main question. What the heck is the difference?
Are they just using Cedar, non-specific type that is so much cheaper and poor quality that they can shave off $30-$40 off the process?

Because when you look at the same stuff on Ruger's link. It'll specifically use the word Spanish.

I guess this will/does answer my question in my noob post. Just stay away from these vague descriptions and what sounds too good to be true IS for some reason.

Edit:
Crazy to think that people make knock-offs of absolutely everything.
Buyer beware is never more important than today.

Just wanted to share some important info I got from a salesman at tampahumidor.com. I asked them what the difference is between their unit of the Ravello which they sell at $99 (eBay) and $109 (website) and the $66 unit from these other guys.

This was their response.

"...difference I see is the exterior finish - this one has a matte finish and ours has a nice high gloss finish. As for the contruction, I really cannot speak on that but they are offering this humidor at $66 plus free shipping - my cost alone on our unit is more than that. There has to be some major corners cut on the construction"

While it is still unclear what the difference exactly is, whatever it is, it seems fishy. Based on what you said jst and what the Tampa rep mentions, I think this is very very good info for other Noob's out there to hear.

As has been said though, not only live & learn but I am sure that you can correct many of the issues and still have it be a great box.

I took a chance, not expecting much. Cheap price included shipping.

Rosewood finish. It has large top section with tray and dividers. Two drawers with a divider each. Two large humidifiers, analog hygrometer.

Pro's:

Prompt service. Placed order on Tuesday, received the following Monday.
Arrived undamaged, well packed, no nicks or scratches.
Construction looks about average. Hinges work nice and smooth. Tom seems to fit nicely.

Cons:

Analog Hygrometer appears to mounted permanently in the lid.
Velcro to attach humidifiers. I hate Velcro. Paperwork said magnets.
One drawer has a loose knob. Needs a shot of super glue.
A little up down space in the drawers. Box was frozen when delivered. (thanks Minnesota). They may tighten up when it thaws out and absorbs some humidity. If not it might require a thin shim in the bottom.

Liked the idea of the drawers for easy access, not sure how well they will work humidity wise. Probably the place to keep my everyday smokes.

I'm satisfied with this purchase. Plan on using beads so calibrating hygrometer is not an issue. Average quality for a low cost Humidor. Under $70 including shipping.

Does it look like this?

I've had two of these for a couple of years. They work fine. Mine are lined with Spanish Cedar veneer. The drawers are not as good as the main humi, so I keep a humitube in each section and that works, plus I pud a digi hygrometer in the the upper section. season it well.

Re: 300 Count Humidor

After owning my cheap on for a few months now, I can say the top half has worked out well and the seal is tight. I got mine for $44 including shipping so, I'm not at a lose.

One day I'll have a nice one, but for a starter it isn't bad. Now, I want one that holds 1000 as my habit has grown.

Re: 300 Count Humidor

The aftermath: I have come to the conclusion that the top section of this humidor is mostly Spanish Cedar, I added a layer of scotch tape around the edge to tighten the seal. The RH holds steady using a combination of the humidifiers that came with it and beads. Does a good job of storing my cheaper everyday smokes. The bottom drawers seem to be more aromatic, probably red cedar. I shimmed the drawers to fit tighter, glued strips cut from cedar sheets that came in a couple of 5 packs to the top edge of the drawers. Lined the floor under the drawers with cut up cedar cigar boxes. The drawers will hold rh using a 1oz bead stick in each drawer and would probably hold about 50 sticks each, but I use one of the drawers to hold accessories, and the other as a dry box instead.

I also have a cooler that stores about 15 bundles, 3 -50s & 1-100 count humidors + Three tupperdors that hold 100ea. The humidors were imperfects from Cheap Humidors and Premium Humidors. The tupperdors were an experiment but work well and I use a cedar tray in each for cedar. All except the cooler fit nicely in a old time built in linen closet. Total cost of all this stuff including $20 for a pound of 70% beads (with the exception of the cooler that I already had) was less than $200. Storage for almost a 1000 sticks and make them easy to sort and find.

Hindsight: If I had it to do over I would not have bought this humidor and went with three more of the 8 1/2 qt airtight tupperdoors (12.50 each + $11 each for the trays). More see through storage less hassle.
