Any Knife Cutters Here?

I just use swiss army knife (which I always carry) to cut my cigars, and I don't seem to have any problems. Does anyone else do this?

I sort of hold the knife in my fingers and push the cigar into the blade with my thumb, running around the cigar slowly going deeper until the cap just plops off. It seems to work very well, and leaves a fairly clean cut.

I can see it not working if you were to just cut it like a saw.

Thoughts?

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I have used my pocket knife (sharp) to make a V-cut with great success, which works better for me than trying to cut off the cap.

I have used this same technique. I have also just made a slit in the cap and although it can be a tough draw for a pull or two always opens nicely.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I recently saw a cigar rep do the same thing. I thought he would have used a nice cutter or punch. Instead he whipped out a Kershaw pocket knife, and clipped the top right off.

I'll have to try that.

For me, it makes the experience a little more enjoyable. It has a certain "old world charm."

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I've used one of my Benchmades or Spyderco a few times. Now I have a punch cutter on my keychain, so I don't worry about it much.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I carry a Spyderco with me, tried it once, and it cut OK. Better to just keep a small punch on a keychain or a small cutter in your pocket.

This one is made by Wenger, and was an Ebay find for me some years back. I like it because it also has the golf tools.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I have used a knife before. It wasnt to bad but the end did split alittle. I think it was because it was not super sharp.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

Use to carry a Leatherman, but not much need for it now.

Swiss Army makes a knife with a cigar guillatine (sp) attached.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

I use a pocket knife 90% of the time. Or a hunting knife. The largest knife I've used has a 7 1/2 balde.

Re: Any Knife Cutters Here?

You can buy pocket knives specifically intended for use as a cutter. Place the head of the cigar into the hole in the handle, then close the knife. Works just like a basic cutter, but you can sharpen it.

Obviously, you get what you pay for when buying knives. There are many at different prices and different quality.
