Radio Shack Wireless Hygrometers - Question -

Does anybody have any problems with these things NOT reading the remotes? I bought one to go in my cabinet that I am building - and everytime I look at it I just get more pissed off.
If I had the receipt I would take it back - but no.

It keeps losing the remote readings and the only way to make it work again is to remove the batteries or reset it. I'm about ready to take a hammer and just smash the damn thing. And oh yeah - the remote is only about 18" away from it.

The exact one I have is pictured below. And looking at it - it's not showing a remote reading either - Maybe that should have been a warning to me.

On edit: CLICK HERE for a close up of it actually working. Scroll down to the picures to see it.

I don't have one (my first humidor is supposed to ship on Tuesday), but when I was looking at Radio Shack and reading the reviews, people kept complaining that they were losing signal. So I decided screw it, I won't get one of them.

I have this one:

It works well. The humidor is in a room directly above the room where the base unit is located.

That may be because the sensors were outdoors. So far my Model: 63-1089 is working well.

Yeah, that's true. However, while they were outside, some of the complaints indicated that the sensor was only 10-20 feet away. So I don't know if it's a matter of thickness of walls, distance, bad weather could mess it up, or a combination.

If it works for you, keep using it!

Seems to me that the whole purpose of having a remote sensor is to be able to place them outside - I mean they are weather stations

One would think. At least mine is working for my intended use.

Re: Radio Shack Wireless Hygrometers - Question -

I wonder if there is not some sort of RF interference from the electronics under the humi (or Bluetooth in the area, etc). Seeing that you have a glass front, you could almost purchase one of the nice weather/clock/temp/hygro units from eBay that run on AAA batts and just hang it from one of the shelves inside? I think I had also seen a couple other units that had a thin ribbon cable for connection?

I have one and love it, it works well.I turned a friend on to these who just bought his first humi about a month ago and he has had no problems either.

As with anything I am sure there are a few with issues. Over all I believe this is a good unit for those without a glass top humidor.

I have the same unit. I had a problem with 1 sensor but I put better batteries in it and it hasn't been a problem. The couple of times it lost the sigbal it came back by itself.

Did that - brand new in everything - same stuff. I'd go out and get another sensor if I was certain it just wasn't a crap unit to begin with.

Ron, I just picked up the model that DAL mentioned in post #3 and it seems to be doing great. I know you don't have the receipt, so surely a refund is out of the question, but maybe they'll still let you exchange it for a new one. It's worth a shot if the RS is nearby. Sorry you got a lemon.

Re: Radio Shack Wireless Hygrometers - Question -

I did the 75% salt test on my hygrometers over the past couple of days. I had done the #63-1013 a couple of years ago. It hasn't changed.

Radio Shack #63-1013 ($24.95) 74%
Radio Shack #63-1089 wireless ($17.97) 79%
Walmart Springfield PreciseTemp model 91551 ($6.47) 72%

The #63-1013 can be adjusted if taken apart, but as it's only off by 1%, I didn't bother.
Instructions in section 6.2 here:

http://www.smokemag.com/faq/

DYI to improve sensitivity of remote sensor used with #63-1089. RS sensor is the same as Oregon Scientific sensor.
