I believe desk tops, to answer your question, are built to a much much higher standard than cabinets due to the fact that they must be quite a bit more robust than the cabinets, due to the harsher environment.

Actually, I found the question didn't make a lick of sense, any colledge edumacated stoodent that paid 2 grand for a desktop should sure as hell know what he paid for and exactly why he paid 2 grand. If you don't, I seriously suggest you stop buying things you can't fully appreciate.

It was a graduation gift from my dad, and I don't have any regrets about it, its beautiful. I just wanted to clarify the difference between cabinet and desktop quality/prices. It's hard to see small desktops sell for the same price as a cabinet.

Re: I don't understand humidor pricing

I imagine that the largest component of a humidor's cost is the labor. When I look at a Marshall humidor or a Davidoff, I can appreciate the workmanship.

Yes, cabinet humidors are larger but relatively speaking, the extra wood is not so high that it might out-cost 30 layers of a hand-rubbed coating.

Go to Aristocrat Humidors http://www.aristocrathumidors.com/ . Although I don't know if Bob is making desktops anymore, he has them advertised on the site - see the bottom left of the homepage. You will see many that are more expensive than some of his cabinet size humidors - even some cabinet sized humidors that include the set-and-forget system.

Davidoff is a piece of art. The Swiss don't mess around when it comes to fit and finish. I don't recall the exact number, but a large desktop has hundreds of hours in it.
