Cigar in the fridge

Ok My dad is not a cigar smoker but he bought a "Maquis La Aroma De Cuba"(I dont know if that last part is the name and Marquis is the brand??). And it has been in the fridge for like 2 months. Now when he did that I told him it was going to ruin it but he didn;t believe me and put it in there. I was wondering if you put the cigar back in a humidor for awhile will it go back to its original state, or is it garbage??

Re: Cigar in the fridge

Ive read here that putting the cigars in the fridge is a total NO! since it is designed to reduce relative humidity and is contrary as what you want for the cigars. maybe if you put the cigar in a humi it would become smokeable again but it is probably that it wont regain its original flavors.

Re: Cigar in the fridge

As WillyGT stated the refrigerator is designed to remove moisture from the box. Another concern is the flavors that the cigar is going to absorb from the other food, that will ruin it for sure. Putting it back in a humi will put the moisture back but it will not return the flavors to the tobacco that drying removed and it will definately not remove the flavors that it absorbed from the food. I think ruined is a good description.

A cigar sitting in the fridge for two months is in trouble. It can come back with time and propper reconditioning but as viper said might have some unusual flavors and then again maybe not.

I use the fridge with cigars that are over humidified when I bring them home. Four days to a week or so is about as long as I ever let them stay. I also use the fridge with new cigars I want to condition from beetles. First into the freezer for 72 hours, (not three days it must be at least 72 hours), then into the fridge for two days and then I let then stand at room temp for a few days. After all this, into the humi or igloodor for a bit of sleep. mb

Re: Cigar in the fridge

What about cigars that were in a zip-lock type bag in the fridge? Would they still have flavor issues if you could bring them back in the humi?

Although the zip lock might retard the loss of taste I still don't think it is a good idea. I will say this though. When I first started working in this business about the time Columbus sailed back into the Spanish port to bring in the tobacco men did keep cigars in the fridge however some of you can remember that in those days the fridge was not a self defrosting model and there was much more humididty in the cooling compartment. Since food will dry out in a zip lock I think it is safe to assume so will cigar and supsequently thier falvors will be affected. mb

Re: Cigar in the fridge

I agree with everything that has been said here, but isn't a La Aroma de Cuba Marquis a tubo?
Perhaps the tube protected the cigar a bit more than the usual cello & slowed down the evaporation process while keeping the aromas of onions & whatnot off of the cigar.
I would take it out of the tube & stow it in my humi for a coupla months. What the heck do you have to lose?

The only reason one would place cigars In the fridge, Is during the beetle prevention protocol. 2 days In the freezer, One day In the fridge, then place In the humidor.

Re: Cigar in the fridge

what if someone keeps them in the freezer? My friend's mom brought some contraband and stuck it in the freezer. I was mortified but didn't know how bad this actually is.

Do you think it's best to $hit-can the cigars I did this with? It was only 3, and before my CS and humidor days, so not a huge loss if I do. I thought maybe the humi could bring them back in 6 months, but if you think I should cut my losses, I'll just pitch 'em....

Two simple rules of life

Never pitch a cigar unless your positive it will is a bad smoke, light it, try it, and than decide.

Never use a good beer to put out a fire, drink it than piss on the fire.

I agree with miketafc here. Why pitch it. I've found cigars in my glove box that were there probably a year and I forgot about them. I smoked them dry. What the heck, it's still a cigar. LOL mb

I agree with UM and M..........I never throw one away unless I light it and it sucks......or it's turned to dust and I can't cut or light it properly. I've found cigars in my huntiing backpack, glovebox, golf bag, tackle box, etc. that were unattended for weeks/months. As long as you don't live in an extremely dry climate, you're probably OK.
