ash frequency
I know there's a lot of talk about waiting for a long ash, making sure contruction is good, etc.
But I was wondering if this is how everyone ashes or not. Personally, I like to ash a bit more often. Once in a while I'll wait and make sure it can hold for longer, but for the most part, I like to get a peak into the heart of the cigar a bit often. I like being able to see if its burning in a sharp cone, dull cone, dome, flat, slant, etc. I like to see if the ash breaks right next to the burning core, or still leaves a thin ash layer. I like to see if the burning part is bright orange, or duller red, if it burns just as brightly when I'm just holding it, or only when I draw. I like the brief, subtle flavor difference of the unprotected draw. |

Re: ash frequency
This weekend I smoked an ERDM robusto larga that the ash held onto for almost 2 inches then fell. It was sad indeed, I like long ashes. I usually let one fall naturally then ash every inch after that.

Re: ash frequency
I think a cigars ash is one of its beautiful traits. With out it, it seems naked. I think good ash can add to the complexities of the cigars taste, plus the longer my ash stays on the better the burn is when it falls off. It's fun to see how long the ash will stay on

Re: ash frequency
i don't see a benefit from seeing how long your ash can hold on in the total experience/flavor of the cigar... so, i knock mine off whenever i feel the urge, or about every 3/4" or so.
long ashes can look cool though, and it's fun to see how long you can keep one on. |

Re: ash frequency
I'm an asher too. Every inch or so. They always seem to fall when I least want them to if I go for a long ash.

Re: ash frequency
I ash pretty regularly. For whatever reason, I seem to get more out of the flavor when it's been ashed...but what the hell do I know...

Camacho Havana will hold and ash like none I have ever seen. I was determined to get one from end to band. Got close a few times. Darn Wind.

Re: ash frequency
I always let my ashes fall off naturally, but sometimes it bites me in the ass. Seems this week especially, I've gotten some monster ashes right in my lap.

Re: ash frequency
I used to let the ash go until it fell naturally. Got tired of dropping ash on my shirt, shoes, drink, etc. Now I keep it under and inch.

Re: ash frequency
I like my ashes long bc it helps keep the cigar cool and I tend to smoke rather fast, especially if I can't help myself and it's a REALLY good cigar! I remember one time when in Vegas, Poker was smoking a Cohiba Esp (I think that was the cigar) and had a long ash going until the band at which point it fell off the cigar and into his brand new tennis shoe on the floor!

Re: ash frequency
I've been driving in the car letting the ash get really long, only to have it fall onto my lap.

Re: ash frequency
For me, it totally depends on the cigar and my mood. I never bother toying with the ash on an inexpensive cigar but, when I'm feeling slightly contemplative (read: drinking a bit) I do sometimes like to grow a big ash on a Cuban. They have a look all their own and, under the right circumstances, a good ash can make me smile just looking at it. If it starts to get in the way of smoking the cigar, however, then I dump it.
