Expanding Foot??

I was reorganizing my humidor today to make room for some new sticks I bought when I noticed that some of my cigars looked a little strange.

They looked as though the foot was expanding a little bit. I don't know if they were always like that and I never noticed, or if I was just seeing things.

Is this a common occurance and if so, what could be causing it? I had recently removed these cigars from the cello and I don't know if that is related to this or not.

Thanks for the help.

What's the humidity in your humi? Are they lying flat or on end? A cigar will certainly expand if exposed to too much humidity too fast. The outer leaves expand before the inner are equalized, and can split the wrapper. If it's just the foot, is there any relation to proximity of the foot and a humidifier? Just throwing out some ideas.

Re: Expanding Foot??

Not sure of the humidity of the humidor. I don't have a hygrometer yet. I am using a jar of the gel that you add water to and pop into the humi. I am not sure how well that works.

I didn't see any splitting of the wrapper. The cigars are lying flat and the foot of the cigars are as far away from the himidifier as possible.

I was looking at the photo gallery on here and noticed some other cigars look like they have a slightly wider foot as well. Like I said, I might be seeing things but I am not sure.

It is true that many cigars are not shaped straight (parejo) to begin with.

Very true.

The cigars in question are Casa Torano Toro's and CAO Criollo Pato's.

I need a hygrometer I guess.

Re: Expanding Foot??

I had this happen to a couple cigars.. The humi was a little dry so I added more humidity. The foot soaked it up like crazy. Almost looked like an explodeing cigar.. When I go smoke them the Double corona will turn into a Toro.. I plan on just chopping off the expanded area..

Re: Expanding Foot??

yea, sounds like your keeping your sticks a little to humid. Not uncommon at all, I've had some do this before and if you correct the problem before it gets too serious they will be okay.

Get yourself a good hygrometer and I would recommend getting some humidification beads so you don't have this problem in the future.

Yep too humid! Definatly get a hygro and watch that gel stuff carefully. Mold will grow on it! Go with beads from http://www.heartfeltindustries.com

Re: Expanding Foot??

I looked at the website.
I think I should get one of the bead tubes.
What size would be good for a 40 Capacity humidor?

yea the tubes will work great, but if your going to be around this site long you better think about building a coolerdor!!

One good bomb and that 40 ct humi will be busting at the seams!!!

Re: Expanding Foot??

The smallest tube they have should be fine.

I change my answer after reading dadof3illinois's...

On second thought build a walk in humidor with an active humidification system and temp control. Just jump right to it, we all will eventually and you will have us all beat.

Re: Expanding Foot??

Coolerdor = Humidor build from cooler, big and cheap
Bomb = A bunch of cigars mailed to someone out of kindness, not expecting anything back

Somewhere around here there is a list of all these terms...
