Anejo's weird problem
Hey all,
With all the talk of people trying to get these, I don't know how many have smoked one from this year yet. So taking chibnkr's sig advice and smoking the good stuff today, I lit up a #46 tonight to partake in my first Anejo. Through the first inch or so I was very impressed. I loved the spice and the subtle sweetness it gave off. Then I felt a slight wetness, as I do sometimes with very wet pipe tobacco. I pulled the stick from my lips and turned on the light, and much to my disappointment I saw this: ![]() I was kind of drawn back. I thought at first just wipe it off and continue enjoying the nice smoke. So I took and wiped it off and forged on. After about 3 puffs I felt the tobacco juice hit my tongue again. Again I wiped it off thinking if I could only make it through the next inch or so it would go away. Well..... it didn't. It only got more and more juice spitting out with every puff. Now I normally smoke a pipe and I am used to a little juice, but this thing was almost like drinking through a straw. ![]() So then, my question comes to you all. Has anyone else had this problem with an Anejo? It seems with all the prestige around these cigars, they should not do something like this. |

Re: Anejo's weird problem
Man, that is strange, never had anything like that before. Any ideas at all what caused it?

Re: Anejo's weird problem
I have had some fresh Opus' do that on me. Did it harden at all? I usually cut a little more off of the cap and keep smoking. I think its something about excess nicotine?

Re: Anejo's weird problem
That be tar. It might be a sign to let them rest at a lower humidity.
However, I've never heard of an Anejo do that. I've seen pics on here of a king b that did that.

Re: Anejo's weird problem
Humidity is not the problem. I keep all my sticks at 65% and most of the time I let them dry box for a few hours still. This was all about construction.
Clipping would have done no good either as it was not just in or around the cap. This tar was pulling up from within the cigar. Sucks really. I have only a couple more and I hope that they do not have this same problem either. So has anyone else smoked one from this year yet? |

Re: Anejo's weird problem
I have not, but I am sure many here have, and this is the first I have heard of this problem.

Re: Anejo's weird problem
Send me the rest of your Anejos. I will test them thoroughly. I won't rest until I can provide you a complete analysis, with photos.

Re: Anejo's weird problem
I have had that with two 48s from about two years ago. My humidity wasn't high (usually runs a bit low say 63%). I think some of the sticks have so much oily goodness that you get tar build-up. I just try to avoid it. Get a napkin and let it absorb the tar from the cut. As long as you don't get any on your tongue you're ok.
For what it is worth... I don't know how to avoid it. (Also had this on a Davidoff Millennium)

Re: Anejo's weird problem
I have never seen tar in a cigar before. Thank you for posting the pic. I will be more diligent when searching for Anejos.
As long as it is not beetles and mold then you are good. Like Tom and David said, let them age a few months in lower humidity and they will be golden. ![]()

Re: Anejo's weird problem
Nah, the rollers who would have been making Opus were making Anejos instead.
