I have never been given an answer to this question.

OK... I might be over analyzing things here, but this is a question that has always vexed me to a certain degree.

Does anyone know why the smoke that comes from the foot of the cigar has a blue hue to it, and the smoke that comes from the head of the cigar, as well as the smoke that you blow out of your mouth and nose has a greyish brown hue to it?

People have given me answers that they pulled from thin air, but nobody has ever given me an answer that they can back up with evidence.

ANOYNE?????

Probably from the tobacco oils as the smoke is pulled through the length of the cigar.
Send me everything in your humi and I will do individual analysis until I have come to a scientific conclusion.

Re: I have never been given an answer to this question.

Here's an out of the air answer:

When the smoke travels through the cigar or touches the inside of your mouth/nose, the "blue" gets filtered out of the cigar.
Or, as the smoke travels through the tobacco leaf, it cools and therefore the "blue" might just condense onto the cold leaves.

So the smoke looks gray/brown without the "blue" in it.

So you have been given answers, just answers that didn't satisfy you. You should change the title to "I have never been given a satisfactory answer to this question"

I have no answer to your question BTW which means this is another unsatisfactory answer.

Because molecules in the smoke scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colors because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

The smoke from the foot of the cigar has very little water particles.
The smoke from your mouth is loaded with water particles.
When light reflects off the smoke particles, you see a blue hue from the smoke from your mouth because of the abundance of water particles.

this is why the sky looks blue....large amounts of water particles.

wait...its the other way around...

I hope you are not looking directly into the sunlight, Greg. That is bad for you.

I can see there being some truth to this answer. I know in the fire service you can always tell when water starts being applied to the fire because the smoke turns a grayish white color compared to the darker range it is usually blowing being water starts being applied.

I think it has to do with the heat. Hotter on the end that torched.
The end that glows red when u pull air through.

Re: I have never been given an answer to this question.

I cant find the article but I remember reading an article on second hand smoke that talks about how the smoke drawn through the cigar has a different composition than the smoke coming off of the foot because of the quantity of air being drawn through. The smoke that comes through your mouth is coming from a hotter fire than the smoke from the foot due to the air being drawn through (like how a fire burns much hotter with fresh air being blown into it). The other smoke coming from the head is left over smoke that was pulled through the cigar when you were puffing on it but never made it into your mouth so it is the same color.

I dont know how accurate this is I kinda just reasoned it out from the comment on the particulate matter in the smoke being different for 2nd hand but it makes sense.

Oh also look at the smoke off of the foot right after taking a puff. It will be gray and the fade back into blue smoke as the foot cools.

Re: I have never been given an answer to this question.

At the time of the big bang when the primordial mass exploded in the original and primordial cigar bomb, all cigar related matter has been accellerating away from all other cigar related matter. Since the foot of the cigar is farther away from you, you will see the smoke as being more blue than the smoke closest to you. This is in fact because the foot of the cigar is receding away from you at an incredible rate of speed. An effect known as blueshift.
