Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

If you run a search for "Afrique" you will get loads of information as these have been reviewed several times. But to answer your question directly, they are my favorite line of cigars. They are not the ones that I turn to everyday since they are rather expensive. They (with one exception) are also not my highest ranked cigar, a certain Fuente Don Carlos holds that honor. What makes them my favorite is that they are very consistent, and consistently good. These are my "special occasion" cigars of choice (the Machame in particular), they age very well, and every vitola seems to have a very similar profile. If I cannot find a corona, a can buy the robusto (Jambo) and know that I will enjoy it, too. This is very unlike other lines that I have tried, particularly Fuente. I have found that just because I like the Don Carlos #4 is no guarantee that I will like the Don Carlos #2 Belicoso. And while I rate the Hemmingway Signature very high, I could easily pass on a Short Story. I have even found that to be true with the very consistent Punch cigars where there are some that I really like (Elite and London Club), and some I can certainly pass on (After Dinner). But I have yet to smoke a Montecristo Afrique that I did not like, and I have smoked at least several of each of the various sizes, and several boxes of the smaller sizes. Even my least favorite of the line, the Kilimanjaro, is enjoyable to me after sitting a while.

An added bonus to this line is that it got me off of the "slippery slope" that everyone talks about here. This may be heresy to say, but to my tastebuds, the Montecristo Afrique line is so close in taste to the Cuban Montecristos that it is not worth the bother for me to chase after the forbidden fruit. This is just my impression and should not be taken as an absolute. I am sure that people who smoke a lot of Cuban Montecristos regularly will heartily disagree.

Well, that's my opinion, for the little it is worth. I hope it helps!

The Afriques are on my list of favorites. Smooth and flavorful. I have never had a bad one.

Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

I got a Jambo fiver from the devil. When I first got them I had to try one, so I selected one of them and smoked it. I would say it was one of the best cigars I have had to date. I would recommend at least trying them.

Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

Ditto on the comments. I first tried a Jambo from a sampler and liked it so much I ordered a box of the Jambo Jambos. Go to JRs and order the 5 pack samplers. I think they run around $18 which is an outstanding deal.

I like a Afrique line. Especially the Jambo and Jambo Jambo.

The only NC Monte line I really like.

They are a very tasty line. As soon as I make room in the humi, a box of Jambo's are going in.

I'll swim against the tide on this one and say,

I was gifted a 10 pack of these, smoked two and promptly gifted away the other eight!

Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

I have a half box of Jambo and 2 boxes of Sublimation. It's imho one of the best lines out there. It's hard to explain but you also get that certain "Twang" in it's flavor profile. Either way it's a fine smoke and the price isn't half bad either considering the brand name.

The Sublimation are interesting. I ended up pulling most of the first box that I bought out of the glass tubes and aging them nude. Worked pretty well. After getting a bit more experience with aging tubed cigars, I left the next box in the glass. I can't wait to give one of these a try. My experience with the Afrique line tells me that I need to leave them alone for a little longer before messing with them. That's OK. I still have Machame, Uhuru, Jambo, Jambo Jambo, Kilimos, and Safaris in the humi to tide me over. Can you tell that I really don't like these . . . NOT! I'm also glad that there are more of you that can detect a "Twang". For a while there, I thought my mind was playing tricks. Not that it matters . . . taste is all in the head anyway.

Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

Haven't tried the Monte Afrique, but I have tried the Don Lino Afrique. Very thick and has nice hints of dark coffee. Thought I'd throw that into the mix.

I'm with you on the aging part. It's just a flat out better cigar with at least over 3 months on it. Especially the sublimations. I've also always taken them out of there tubes and aged them nude. So far it's been a great smoke for me. I can relate to the "twang" scenerio too. I thought it was just a freak thing at first but, as I read around here in some reviews it looks like I'm not the only one. The brand overall it simply a must try for anyone. But, like you said bro they do need a little age on them.

Re: Monte Cristo Afrique

That settles it! I have to get me some of these sticks to try. JR has a fiver of Uhuru for only $15. Its actually cheaper than if you bought a whole box.

I think I'll smoke one just to see what its like, then tuck the other four away to sleep untill the Spring.

They will never make it til' spring. Those puppies are like Lay's patato chips, you can't have just one.
