Relighting a cigar

I was smoking a nice long A.Fuente Gran Reserva the other day. I got called away and just left the cigar outside on the balcony. Wasn't able to get back to it until the next day. I put the head in my guillotine cutter, chopped off the 1/2 inch below the ash, relit and continued my smoke.

It seemed OK to me, but is there any sort of downside to this? Does anyone else regularly smoke a stick partway, only to relight the thing the next day?

Re: Relighting a cigar

I have tried relighting one and anything after it get cold never tasted well to me.

But if your ok with how it went after you relit it, then by all means go for it. If it did not bother you and your ok with the taste then I see no problems or downsides.

We all have our own tastes and feeling on things. What works for one might not work for another. Just how it goes.

A day seems a little long but if it's sitting for a few hrs, try purging it beforehand in addition to clipping the foot..Purging does wonders!

Re: Relighting a cigar

If you intend to relight a cigar later on, when the cigar dies out, blow as much air through the cigar to push out any stagnant smoke in the cigar. Try not to keep them outside in the elements, but relighting it should be fine.

If it tastes fine, then it is...

Re: Relighting a cigar

I hate relighting..But if im smokin something good and know I have to stop and it gonna go out,I always cut the head off then while still lit and blow the stale smoke back through the cigar..The smoke thats in the cigar settleas and makes it even worse.

Re: Relighting a cigar

The next day? That seems like an awful long time to me. A few hours and I find my cigars taste bitter ,harsh and hot, even after purging the stale smoke. I must say, just like all the previous replies, if you thought it was ok, then it was.

Re: Relighting a cigar

I tried to relight a cigar only once or twice, the time measured only in hours, and it didn't work out for me. In fact, worse than that, the experience was so awful, that the memory of it ruined me for the others of the same type that I had for weeks into months before I could try those same smokes again.

Nah. Not for me. I know it's lousy to lose a good cigar, but it's worse to have a bad memory of it.

Re: Relighting a cigar

Last year for my birthday I double fisted a Padron Anni Executivo (N) and a Monte2 hangin' on my porch. Couldn't finish either one so I left them in my oversized ashtrays, outside. Luckily the weather was pretty temperate with relatively decent humidity in the aire of those few days. Three days later I was out on the porch again. Figured what the heck & re-lit the two sticks. [Yeah, I know, I'm a sick puppy!] Anyhow, neither of them wre horrible. The Padron Anni was beyond its time but the Monte2 smoked pretty good, nubbed it all the way. True story here, no exaggeration. Learned a lot that week on how much you can "punish" cigars.

Re: Relighting a cigar

I have relit cigars between 12 to 24 hours later and most were fine. Just toss it if it tastes awful after relighting it. Got nothing to lose. Dont forget to blow a little into the cigar to remove any trapped smoke prior to relighting it.

Relighting is like baseball - you win some, you lose some and a few get rained out.

Relighting is like baseball - you win some, you lose some and a few get rained out. I cut, puff out and hope for the best. 40/60 you come back to something nice - maybe 30/70. And:

Maduros relight better;
Red motorcycles are faster.
Don't know why.
Made it up.

Re: Relighting a cigar

from time to time I have to put one down for a while.......if I know I can't make it back before it goes out I purge and clip both ends.........that usually does the trick and will usually preserve the stick for a proper re-light later on.

the previous posts are dead-on..........sometimes it doesn't matter what you do........sometimes they just turn nasty......and at that point.......remember......you can't polish a turd!!!
