Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
Hey Fellow G's,
Will water purified by reverse osmosis work as well in a humidifier as distilled water? Anyone use RO water without any issues? I did a search, but didn't find a whole lot about this topic...

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
I had a friend try it and he said he started to get mold. But I'm curious to see what others say.

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
Distilled water is less than $1/gallon. I use two pounds of beads in my Vinotemps and cooler and have used about 1/3rd gallon in the last six months.

It will work fine. I have not done this... yet. But when I move back home I plan on.
If they sell the Reverse Osmosis Filtration System for Aristocrats to use for their auto fill option, it must be good! scroll to the bottom of this page

Pure water is...pure water. Chemically there would be nothing different between the two, aside from the degree of purity that is achieved. I'd think reverse osmosis would be better.

That is what I was thinking as well... I've been using it for a couple of years so far without any noticeable issues, but I've only recently started sliding down the slope. ![]() And for the question as to why experiment, I ask, why not? That's what most of us are doing here. Experimenting with new ways to store our cigars, new cutters, new lighters, new cigars, etc. Part of the fun is the experimentation and trying something new and different.

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
Going against the grain is something I'm good at! Kill the heretic!
I use filtered water because I have a good filter system. Been using it for 3 years, beads still look and act like new. no noticeable effect on my drymist sticks or my water pillows, or (most important) my cigars. But then again, I'm comfortable with this, so all is good (the real key here!) If your individual comfort level demands a higher degree of care, then go with the distilled water. It's cheap, cheap, cheap. |

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
I'm sure it won't have an immediate effect. There are dissolved ions that osmosis won't remove that will slowly degrade the beads. But how long before it has a noticeable effect is an experiment to run, I guess.
But distilled water is very cheap so I guess I'll let you run that one. Let us know in a year if you've noticed any alteration in RH or capacity.

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
I don't want to totally derail this thread but why don't we use tap water? I have always used distilled because that's what I was always told/read but why is tap bad for the smoke?
t.i.a.!

Tap water is not bad for the cigars (I don't think) BUT it is killer for your beads

Yes, it will work. We use it in our reactor, and that water has to be so super pure that it will not pass current.

I use ro/di water and have been for years without issue. It tests at 0 tds.

Re: Will Reverse Osmosis water work as well as distilled?
Just make sure the RO water hasn't had minerals added to it like most commercial RO water.
