Cigar puffing technique question from a newbie

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I occasionally share a cigar (neither of us are real smokers, we just feel adventurous from time to time). However, neither of us are (for lack of a better term) "good" at cigar smoking. As rookies, we obviously don't inhale the smoke into our lungs, but we have a hard time drawing the smoke into our mouths at all in order to "taste" the cigar smoke. My girlfriend especially has trouble; she often blows through the cigar instead of drawing the smoke in.

Does anyone have any pointers? We don't want to feel too silly because we don't know how to handle a cigar. Any suggestions or tips?

Thanks in advance.

can you take a sip of water through a straw without choking on it or swallowing? Try the same thing with the smoke. It is close to the same thing.

Take a short, what I call a 1/2 puff, let it out the side of your mouth while beginning a full puff....kinda like you see pipe smokers do. Exhale slowly with with your lips kinda in a whistling position and enjoy the flavor.

Hope that helps.

Not a bad question. A lot of noobs I smoke with have difficulty getting a good amount of smoke. They always ask how I get so much smoke and it is very difficult to explain.

I think Bigwaved "straw technique" would be a good way to explain it. At least for me.

Re: Cigar puffing technique question from a newbie

Anybody who hasn't smoked cigars(without inhaling) and has smoked cigarettes/pot seems to have trouble.

I always recommend to suck in, kinda like a straw, and breathe through your nose at the same time. That way you can avoid inhaling the smoke and there is no smoke leaving through the end.

Breathing out through your nose or in?

Re: Cigar puffing technique question from a newbie

The "straw" method is the best description so far. The quick puffs are good to move a lot of air across the burn to get it ignited, but a long, slow-drawn pull to evenly pull air keeps an even burn in my experience.

The tongue will be hard to get the taste, and what it does gather can be limited. Be careful how you are drawing the smoke into the mouth and have it move over the tongue, not right against the front part. After the cigar is lit and has settled down from it's lighting, I try to take a small pull, and exhale through the nostrils. If the flavors aren't that prominent, I increase the amount of smoke so that there is sufficient smoke to provide a flavor, but not enough to overwhelm me.

Even a simple swish around the mouth, as if it were a liquid, can give you an idea of the flavors.

That's where I'm at in my ever-developing methods.
