A Wierd Way of Lighting? You guys decide.
One of my friends that smokes about as many nice cigars as I do, also smokes a lot (I mean a lot) of gas station cigars. One day he watched a John Wayne movie where John lit his nice cigar, then once it was burning he ran the flame all the way down the cigar on all of the sides. So the friend did this to his gas station cigar and said that it brings out more flavor. I've never tried it on a nice one because I'm afraid of hurting the cigar and waisting my money. Has anyone here ever heard of this or tried it?

And who says people are not influenced by movies
I would think that is a waste of time.

Er, most/some/a few/however many people advocate 'toasting' the foot and body of the cigar prior to lighting it, but without the flame ever touching the cigar. I assume this helps release oils and chemicals in the tobacco in the body, helping the flavour or the cigar, and heats the foot to help get an even burn.

Re: A Wierd Way of Lighting? You guys decide.
We have one thread where someone stated that using a torch lighter dries out the cigar....and this one where someone toasts the whole cigar. quite a contrast. Guess that's what makes this such a fun, unique interest for everyone

Re: A Wierd Way of Lighting? You guys decide.
Hate to dissapoint you ghostrider, I use matches most of the time cos I'm a cheap ass muthafocker. Not sure if it dries out the cigar any more than you would actually smoking it, but if someone knows, tell me... it won't change me doing it, I like the way my stogies smoke, so....
[Edit: In fact, I don't even own a torch lighter.]

Re: A Wierd Way of Lighting? You guys decide.
I've heard this is kind of passe these days. There's need to do this now (unless you like to prep your cigars that way). Way, way back when, cigar wrappers were rolled using some foul glue rather than the tasteless, odorless vegetable glue we use now. Warming up the cigar with a match (or whatever you use to light) lessened the presence of the glue in the cigar's flavor.
See: The Cigar Companion: The Connoisseur's Guide. by Anwer Bati, p. 53 bottom. There may be other better sources but this is the one I remember referring to this practice.
