Question How to cut Torpedos

One thing I have not seen in my limited experience in this club. How far down does one cut a torpedo type cigar?
Thanks

Re: How to cut Torpedos

I cut mine the same way I cut any cigar. Just look for the lowest part where the cap ends, and don't cut below that. And cut quickly. This is important with a torpedo as the cutter may try to slide up the tip, stripping the wrapper rather than cutting.

I'm just a noob though, so anyone else wanna prove me wrong?

Re: How to cut Torpedos

Lately I've been cutting my torps with a V-Cut cutter. I like the edge it leaves on the end - creates a nice texture to the tongue.... as well as usually is the right depth for draw (for me) on most cigars. Nothing irritates me more on torp than when i cut too much off and get a draw that's too easy.

Re: How to cut Torpedos

For a straight cut on a torpedo, cut it on a slant at the angle of the cap...

Re: How to cut Torpedos

Depending upon the cap, I too use a v-cut. Less likely to have the cap come loose and a better draw. If the draw is too tight, then I can use my Zino and change to a straight cut. It depends on my mood. Do remember not to cut too much off the cap...

I predict that you will get so many different answers to this that you won't know anymore about it than you do now, but here's my answer:

On round/flat head cigars, I'm about 50/50 on whether I punch it or use my Xikar cutter, but on torps I cut it so the opening is about the same, or just a little larger than the size of the punch. That's probably about as small as you'd want to go. Some cut a much larger opening, and some use a 30-45* angled cut that supposedly concentrates the smoke and flavor on your tongue and palate, but I have never really been able to tell the difference. I've just recently started getting into the torpedo shape, and I like that I can grip it in my teeth easier, but that's me. I like that I can chomp down on the cigar and still have both hands free to do something else, type on the computer, or whatever. Just take it out to sip on a beverage or knock the ash off.

So, since they are tapered differently, there's no firm answer. Start small and test the cold draw. If it's tight, cut off a little more. If you go big to start, you can't go back.

Damn, all this is just making me want to have another cigar. If I didn't need to go out for some retail combat, I'd probably be foraging through the cooler looking for my next victim.

P.S. - Heheh, four replies in the time it took me to type mine!
Clear as mud?

Re: How to cut Torpedos

for me every cigar is going to have a different "sweet spot" that you prefer (everyone's tastes for draws are different). looser or tighter?

therfore, I usually clip off a tiny bit and then take a cold draw and slowly keep on chopping off mm's until i get to the draw i like.

note though: this is only possible with a good cutter. I have a palio and a cheap piece of crap. and this theory would never work with the latter

Re: How to cut Torpedos

I'm gonna try the v cut next time.
I've recently cut mine on a slant to open up the most surface area with the least structural damage to the torp..

Cut it anyway you like it...Draw easy..
It's all part of the journey

Re: How to cut Torpedos

Man. I feel like such a nube. I've been looking around for cutters, but possibly never quite understood what a "V" cutter really is. I checked around for info on V cutters and from what I understand, they have two blades that cut the end at an angle so that the cut end is pointed. Is that right. Or do I have it wrong. Any of the cutters that I have seen to date cut the end flat. It's simply a matter of how much you cut off.
Thanks for your posts. I agree that cutting off a smaller piece is the way to go. And testing the draw before lighting.
I really haven't smoked many torpedos, but have a box of the Onyx Reserve Belicoso in the humi.

Re: How to cut Torpedos

Cut like any other cigar, just pay attention to how the cap is rolled so you don't cut too far up.

You can always cut higher if did not get it right the first time, but not the other way around.

Re: How to cut Torpedos

I was just wondering about this very thing today! Granted, I dont even have a torpedo to smoke; but I was still curious! Will keep this in mind when I do get one; I like the idea of just keep clipping till you get the draw you want.
