cigar stabilizing

So ive got my humidor stocked with 55 cigars at the moment. Ive got two boveda humidipack sitting in it at 69% for about 2 weeks now. the humidor has been opened up at the most 5 times but for 5 to 10 second intervals which is pretty quick. Now after two weeks of uniterrupted rest (for the very most part) I thought the cigars were gonna pick up in taste atleast a little. But to my surprise their the same thing. Not better but not worst. What can I do to help my cigars stabilize faster....besides wait for longer....Is there any other thing I could do to help my cigars??? Thanks,
PLF

Re: cigar stabilizing

In two weeks at proper humidification you may improve the cigars "smokeability"....ease of lighting, proper burn, staying lit...but it is unlikely the taste will change too noticeably. Any improvement in taste in that short a time is probably perceived from the cigar smoking better. JMHO.

Re: cigar stabilizing

Yeah, two weeks isn't enough for any "aging" to occur. The only reason people recommend resting cigars for a couple of weeks before smoking is to ensure that you don't smoke a cigar that has dried out during shipment, etc.

If you have cigars that haven't been poorly stored, then resting them for two weeks probably won't change a thing.

For example, I had some Punch (Hon) Double Coronas that I didn't like, purchased from JRs. I smoked one the day received, horrible. Smoked one about a month later, still horrible (so they weren't just dry). Smoked one 9 months later, great. So my conclusion was that JR shipped them to me a bit green, so it took a fairly large amount of aging to bring them up to speed.

How can I disagree with anything said above? I have some cigars in my box that I didn't like a few months ago that are now pretty good, some others that were ok and are still ok and others that have just improved in smoke-ability which for me is great! You just have to be patient. It helps to have a large box or a cabinet that you can store several boxes of cigars in so that they are guaranteed to age somewhat over time. Hope this helps. If not, buy some five packs and experiment. Maybe you just don't like the ones that are in your box now. Don't be surprised (pleasantly) when your tastes change. Mine did about 6 months ago. I used to like Macanudos and Glorias. Now, I rarely touch them because I am smoking stronger cigars.

Hope this helps.

Re: cigar stabilizing

Ditto what everyone else has said here. Two weeks is barely enough time for the RH in the cigar to acclimate to your environment. I buy from local B&Ms, and they all store at 70%, where my humidor is at 65%. In my experience so far, it takes at least a month for the cigar to the point where it's at the moisture content I like it, let alone providing for any change in flavor.

Re: cigar stabilizing

two weeks is plenty of time.........those cigars must be defective.

send them to me right away for proper disposal!!

seriously........two weeks will do nothing for the flavor.....give it time..............and then give it some more time.

I've had cigars that tasted like chit and gave most of them away on golf courses..........only to find they matured into great cigars over time. I don't make that mistake anymore.

Re: cigar stabilizing

and don't get impatient and over-humidify......

65-69% is perfect IMHO.

I would have thought this is excessive but my experience shows Hammer is right. It takes forever for a cigar to dry out when you are changing the humidity less than say 10% of the original storage RH. It's taken me about 100 premium cigars to come to the conclusion I like em drier than the average bear and find prepping my near term smoke items in a dry box for around 3 days in 40% humidity conditions makes a premium cubano premium. A wet cuban is worse than your average NC. Just nasty.
