I moisten the cap before cutting, partly to get a sense for the flavor of the wrap.

My supposition is that Lorena Bobbit did that same.

This is why I never cut my cigars in front of my wife.

Are you sure he was moistening it? I've seen BOTL's test the draw of a cigar at the foot but that's only after cutting it.

Who knows? Or it could just be Hollywood movie Phooey!

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

The mustached man put the foot of the cigar in his mouth and gave it a slight twist...it wasn't in there long enough for him to be testing the draw...I am fairly certain it was a moistening or taste testing act on his part. I found it rather bizarre and had never seen anyone do it before.

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

I tend to carry the cigar around in my mouth before I cut it, while I'm getting together all the things I want close-at-hand when smoking. I don't do it for any other reason than the fact that my hands are usually full of other things and it's convinent. I guess that it would have the benefit of a better cut. Wish I could say that was why I had been doing this. I have never seen or heard of anyone putting the foot in their mouths unless it was an acident.

I always moisten the cap in my mouth beforehand. Don't know why i started it, but now the logical reason for me is so i'm sure it doesn't crack or the cap doesn't totally come off (i hole punch, btw, never guillotined in my life, but i've only been smoking 6 years).

I occasionally moisten the cap prior to cutting, but only when the cap hasn't been applied very well and looks like it might come loose. I really prefer to keep the head as dry as I can, it helps with the draw.

I moisten the end as well. I like to get a sense of the flavor of the tobacco prior to the smoke impacting the taste. It also helps with reducing the potential for a split when cutting.

I see guys at my local B&M sticking their cigar in their mouth while licking it until it is really wet. Then they use the store's cutters to clip it and put the cutter back... sick.

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

I've seen a guy moisten the head of the cigar and bite it with his teeth. It was pretty cool.

They are probably old hippies & are just being nostalgic..... Seangar? Any comments?

I had to wet a Fonseca Serie F robusto tonite like that cause it started to unravel when I clipped it.

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

I've never heard of it. I just moisten the head prior to cutting, just to help with not cracking the tobacco leaf.

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

Pour yourself some nice cognac and dip the cap. Don't saturate it, but hold it for a bit or moisten to your taste. Cut or punch. Dip again quickly and shake. Mmmmmmm - sweet sensations !

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

I sometimes moisten the cap before cutting if im going to use my cutter. I dont like to moisten it when im using someone elses cutter though. I dont think they need my spit on their cutter.

Re: Moistening cigar before lighting?

I learned a long time ago before I began smoking cigars, that some people lick the entire cigar to insure an even burn. Over the years I did this too. But then when I began smoking for real, I stopped doing it after reading somewhere about cigar etiquette. To mositen the cap is necessary to insure an even cut without damage to the wrapper but, to lick the entire thing is unnecessary and potentially damaging to the burn. Better to get a good light at the outset to make sure it burns evenly, which for me has been quite tricky.
