Also, I know immediately if I like the "undefined" taste or not after the first couple of puffs, just can't put labels on most of the flavors. My advice is don't worry about identifying flavors --just keep trying them until you find some you like. Good luck!
Agree. Just smoke like the old-timers and the Cubans and spend less time trying to taste different things and more time just determining simply whether or not you like it and relaxing.

@linty
Those Tatuaje brown-labels are niiiice, you'll have fun with them.

Please do not smoke those Tats on an empty stomach. They are on the heavier side of medium in terms of Nicotine. If your not used to the punch, you may be in for a surprise. Keep a sweet refreshment handy as well if for some reason you get lightheaded.

I'm basing this off the your original post of having smoked 2 cigars previously.

Don't forget to kick back and relax! :]

I was thinking the same thing. One of those will put you down if you are not prepared.

I've been smoking cigars for thirty years.
All I taste is tobacco.
That's alright, I like tobacco.

IM with Hermit... I have smoked hundreds, and still dont get the coffee, or leather.. I get the grassy flavor from mild cigars. I was smoking them too fast though, and got "tongue bite" burning my taste buds... I was using a punch to cut my cigar, but I think it was from smoking way too fast. have you tried mild cigars? Like a Romeo y Juliet vintage III. Very mild smoke.

Re: Having trouble with taste...

I'm with you guys, Wigg & Hermit, I don't taste the nuances still but I am able to determine if I like a cigar or not so I guess there's hope for me yet!

On a sidenote, I've found lately that once I get into the last 1/3 of a cigar, I get this familiar and not necessarily good taste in my mouth....is this the nicotine building up? Any others out there get this taste too? What do you do? Stop then?

That happens, and it's tar and nicotine building up. It's a bitter, unpleasant taste, correct? At that point, power purge it to burn off the buildup and clip the cap a little farther up. Then it's usually good to go for a while longer.

The RyJ Vintage line isn't terribly expensive, no. For a beginner, the regular 1875 line is a pretty good mild smoke for a good price. I still enjoy them from time to time, actually. Macanudos are very mild. So mild they don't taste. But for beginners, they work. Try them out, most people like them a lot when they're just starting. But as you move into stronger cigars like the Tatuaje brown label, you'll find the Macanudos to be lacking...everything. I would look into the Romeo y Julieta 1875 though - it's mild but it's got taste, and it's pretty good. The Vintage line is a good choice too if you can find them - good cigars. Also look into H. Upmann and Montecristo White.

or at www.cigarbid.com for less... they are tasty, and mild....used to be one of my fav's, but I like the stronger ones now...

I dont think it has anything to do with your lighter or the way you light it, if your new to smoking your pallet cant taste the different flavors yet it takes a while, I still dont taste all the flavor people review about,

whatcha mean by 'power purge' - blow through it like you're blowing bubbles through a straw in yer coke? or take several deep puffs...

although I ordered the 3-pack of Macanudo 1968 for $9.95 and they're actually pretty full-bodied. I've had one so far and it was pretty good. Otherwise, I really dislike Macs because they're so mild. I did hae a Montecristo Series C the other day I really liked.

When it starts tasting bitter just hold your flame up to the edge of the cherry and blow into the smoke. Helps to clear out the build-up in the cigar and you sometimes get a really neat light show.

I find this really really helps, and for a little update, i've had 5 cigars now and it's going well! The boot taste/sting is gone, and i'm enjoying them a lot more. Just bought a sampler from Munt so I shall be enjoying those! I find near the 1/3 last bit of a cigar, you have to purge quite a bit to get the tar taste out, sometimes I just let the dog lay down and give up on it.

Glad that the purging is helping you.
