Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

To throw a curve ball.......it all depends on circumstances. If there is an ashtray around, I will just let it go out. If I am outside, depends on the surroundings. In the fall and after a drout, tossing it on the ground still smoldering isnt a grand idea. If I am out on the river or hiking, I will get off the trail and dig a small hole and cover it. Cigars will break down, but not as quick as you think, and it looks tacky to have half smoked cigars laying around everywhere.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

I agree with most here, when I put down a cigar thats it, no re-lights for me... nasty.

But.... one of the things I'm finding I enjoy about pipes is I can put them down and come back later!

I'm with Greg. I know the B&M's & online sites sell a single 'cigar-keeper' for those cigars you don't finish. You can put it in there, it'll go out & you can carry it away to have later. Early on, I made the BIG mistake of letting my cigar go out & putting it back in my Xikar pocket case. It took months getting the smell of stale smoke out of the cedar lined case.

Obviously, the 'cigar-keeper' would have helped. But I've heard that you only want to keep a cigar around maybe for a few hours MAX after it's gone out. After that, let it go.

So, if you're talking a couple hours, then light up, purge it a few times; give it a good try. It might still be nasty.

Anyone willing to try this the next time they get interrupted? I don't think I could bring myself to intentionally do this.
I do this every now and again. It helps, but not a whole lot. You still have that funky, old cigar taste, just not as prevalent.

Which is very much like the funky, old cigar taste of a cheap, liquor store bought cigar.

Of course you have to be very tough to use this method.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

if it's a small cigar, I almost never quit and re-light later........

if it's big and worth the trouble, I'll use an appropriate cutter and snip off the lit end right below the ash, I'll blow the smoke out completely and also clip the wet/damp part off the head of the cigar.........this usually renders the cigar dry and smokable for later

if it's a cheapie, I don't bother..........also, if you're clipping the lit end, make sure you're using a very good cutter and make a quick/clean cut; if you don't do it right, you may have an unraveling problem!

Not that bad, but I see some similarities.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this should only be attempted by a rabbi.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

If I can't finish one due to time constraints or the misses doesn't like the smell, I will purge it for a good 30 seconds, let it burn itself out then cut off the burnt end about half an inch past the burn.
