Best way to put out a cigar?

How are you supposed to put a cigar out? Is there a way to do it so that you can light it up again later?

I know this might seem like a weird question, but because of "things" I might not have enough time to devot to smoking a full stick, so I'm curious if there is a way to preserve it (or whatever) so I can light it up again a few hours later and still enjoy it, rather than waste it.

I never light up a stick I've already been smoking. But, that's my preference. If you're planning on lighting it up again, blow all the smoke out of it, then let it go out on its own. If you snub it out, you not only run the risk of damaging it beyond repair, but you also let out all that nasty smelly stuff that everyone hates so much.

That's the best way to deal with one.

Let it burn it self out. Never snub a cigar, it's also painful for everyone else to watch a nice stogie getting it's face crunched.

Just let it die. If you light it back up after a while, purge it while re-lighting. This will help but it will never taste the same. Maybe you should look into picking up smaller cigars or some el cheepos you don't mind tossing.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

On those rare occasions that I don't finish I will purge the cigar and let is go out by itself and then I will cut the end off with my oversize cutter. When I come back to it I will smoke it when doing the yard or something else where I am not so concerned with the taste. Unless the house is on fire and or water is leaking into the house I try not to be disturbed when having a cigar.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

Yes, just let it go out. Cigars start to taste rank after they've been sitting there for more than an hour or so and I wouldn't recommend re-lighting one the following day. It will taste like a completely different cigar. If you find that you don't have enough time to smoke the cigar, I'd suggest finding something smaller.

You should always just set it down, leave it alone and let it die a noble death . Seriously, this also puts out less smoke than if you smash it.

Greg is smart. He knows stuff.

Re: Best way to put out a cigar?

Aside from the obvious taste changes you will get by re-lighting it later, I have sometimes wondered about how effective it would be to quickly purge it, then just clip off the still-burning cigar right behind the cherry? I figure this way you don't expose the rest of the cigar to the cooling ash and smoke that I think might be the source of the "stinky cigar butts" because when the ash and smoke cool off the chemistry changes and things like water vapor condense....

Anyone willing to try this the next time they get interrupted? I don't think I could bring myself to intentionally do this.
