The point of holding an ash, other than the bragging rights, is twofold:

  • Helps temper the air coming into the cigar by warming it and thereby reducing the need for the cherry to flare up to burn and
  • Helps keep the cherry insulated so that it doesn't burn out as quick and leave you holding a charred stump you have to relight.
+1 this seems to make complete sense.

And of course the prestige.

I was so flabbergasted that I didn't even really respond. And then he went on to tell me how my cigar was "dipped" and it wasn't a real cigar (it was a Dirt Torpedo, which is not even flavored let alone sprayed or dipped).

So cherish your ash, my god!

Wow...that's right on level with the Brit shoving someone else's 'gars up his nose and insulting them (http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=191941)

What is it with elitists who feel the need to show off? I don't know a single cigar smoker who is rude to other cigar smokers - I've even known a couple who smoke without the band in case the person they're smoking with has a 'lesser' stick. But showoffs who wants us to think they know what they're talking about wind up shooting themselves in the foot and proving their ignorance every time. I just don't get it.

Oh, and I heard when I was a kid that Bob Geldof also had a wire in his cigarette in the opening shot of "Pink Floyd's The Wall" in order to get that long ash. Wonder if they got that trick from the Churchill story?
