Never had one die before, but last night was smoking a partagas short and it just died in the last 1/3rd. Was only about 45 seconds after the last puff, went to puff again - totally out. Wierd.

I have only been able to nub one cigar ever in my life. Could the ambient temperature and rh of where you are smoking affect this even though the cigar is stored properly before you begin to smoke it? I live in Houston, so it's always very humid.

IMO this is attributed the speed at which you smoke. The faster/longer you puff, the more tar buildup and moisture accumulate at the end. Alot of people take huge, deep puffs......this doesnt work for me. Again IMO, this causes the cigar to get too hot and you lose the flavor. I have read many places a cigar is to be sipped, not guzzled. Treat a cigar as a glass of wine....not a shot of tequila. I also purge after every few puffs. A majority of the new guys I have known(myself included) smoked cigars way too fast. I still have a endedncy of doing it. This mutes the flavors and causes excess humidity and heat and also will effect the way a cigar burns.

Just my thoughts of course.

So shorter puffs and purging? I'll give it a shot next time!

This has helped me. Maybe not so much shorter pufs.....but longer, more consistent puffs. Don't puff like you would a cigarette. Just a nice delicate, even draw. It is kinda an acquired art, but it will click when you get it right.

On your above post about humidity, I would assume it would have a bit of an effect. I know it has when it was raining or extremely humid outside for me. But keep in mind, alot of cigars are rolled in very humid environments. Might try "dry boxing" a cigar as well. Alot of guys here swear by it.

It seam to me that opening the end (cutting) would allow more saliva to soak into the tobacco, thus soaking it to the point where it won't stay lit. The punch will leave most of the cap to protect it from your saliva. That's why I prefer to use a punch. Just my
