Cigars dying in the last 1/3

Hi,

Quick question. It isn't unusual for me to have a cigar go out in the last 1/3. I haven't seen a definite pattern but it seems to happen more in some brands than others.

I draw about every 45-75 secs. Do I need to draw more often in the last 1/3? I don't have any problems with the first 2/3's--I don't understand it.

Thanks!

Dont really know, maybe the tars are building up and making it moist towards the end.

What humidity level do you store them at?

I find that I don't take as deep of draws as the cigar nears the end (be it burning my lips, burning my fingers, or just seems to smoke better that way at the end), and I sometimes develop some tunnelling because of it. Even though you're drawing as frequently, maybe you're not drawing as much therefore not burning the stick as much? Just a thought.

Re: Cigars dying in the last 1/3

Happens to me too more often than not....and the tar builds up as well so the taste in the last 1/3 isn't as pleasant to me. I'll still relight and purge it though. My Vino keeps the sticks at a pretty steady 65/65 or thereabouts so I don't think it's an RH issue. I too keep a pretty steady 1 or 2 puffs per minute cadence but that doesn't seem to do the trick. I'm not sure I want to be puffing more frequently but I have become a bit obsessed over it to keep the cigar going.

doesn't usually happen to me, what are you using to clip it with. V-cut, guillotine or punch?

Doesn't all that puffing make the 'gar turn bitter?
I'm in agreement; maybe they're a bit over humidified...I keep my sticks slightly on the dry side (65% or so) and I very rarely have one go out. I draw a bit faster though...about 30 seconds to a minute between pulls.

Re: Cigars dying in the last 1/3

Hi,

Thanks for all of the responses. I'll try to answer everyone's questions.

They are kept at about 65-66% (65% beads, recently calibrated digital).

On many of them the last 1/3 can get a bit bitter, but I've been purging them whenever I drop the ash and that has helped a little.

I use a cutter about 85% of the time, a punch the other 15%. They seem to go out more often when cut and not punched (not what I would expect, shrug).

If anything, I draw a bit more often at the end to keep it going--as mrreindeer said. When it goes out I will typically relight it and purge also.

I've had it happen on Partagas, CAO, and others that I can't recall right now. Almost never happens on Padron or Olivas, or Nubs. I don't get it.

Not what I would have expected either. I was thinking the other way around.

Yes, it's odd. Maybe I'll try using a punch for the next few and see what happens. Goofy....

I find this a lot with the CAO Mx2, I think it is the thick oily wrapper. I would guess that they would do better at a lower %rh but just a guess.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that was one of the ones I had trouble with. Good cigar though.

Re: Cigars dying in the last 1/3

May also depend on where you got your cigars from, and how long they have sat in your humi. I have had a couple sticks go out recently, and all were bought from my local B&M. On my last visit I noticed the hygro in their walk-in was at 72*! Too moist I think. Any cigars I purchase from them from now on I will allow to rest in my humi before smoking.

Re: Cigars dying in the last 1/3

From what i remember reading on a previous discussion on this subject, the majority answer was "tar build-up".
