Size Recommendations for 5Vegas A and RP Edge...

Alright... I want to have some cheap smokes for the daily relaxing sessions and I have chosen to go with these two... Biggest reason was for lack of money but still getting decent cigars based on my college budget.

What sizes does everyone recommend for the 5Vegas 'A"? and what size for the RP Edge Maduro?

I know some people prefer different sizes... I don't want small cigar sizes (such as 4inches) though. I want to get the size that is going to provide the best quality taste...

What would be a better place to ask this question than on this forum!

For the Edge I don't think there are all that many sizes available but I prefer the Toro size personally.

If had to pick one for the Series A, I'd go with the "Alpha" (torpedo) size.

Rev.

Yeah, I have always been a toro guy but some people tell me that the torpedo brings the taste better to the palette. I've tried comparing when smoking before but they taste the same to me... maybe I cannot tell the difference right now because I am not a seasoned smoker???

or maybe there really is no difference? But that would make me wonder why the 7-inch San Cristobal cigar would get a 93 rating while the other smaller cigars received 80 ratings.

Different sized cigars of the same blend will have different tastes.
This is probably due to the wrapper/binder to filler ratio.

As far as the Edge goes, I prefer the "Missile"

My preferred size is the torpedo, though for the RP Edge I like the Toro - if that helps you.

Re: Size Recommendations for 5Vegas A and RP Edge...

There are so many blends and vitolas in the 5 Vegas line that I will probably never have a chance to try them all, but I've never had one yet that I didn't like. Based on that, I just scored a box of the Anomoly petitie coronas from c-bid, never having tried any of the "A" series, and even though I rarely smoke anything smaller than a Lonsdale size. I'm very confident that the very worst that will happen is that they're just "OK", and I won't buy them again. I don't expect that, however, and if they're as good as the others I've had, I'll be bidding on some Alpha torpedoes, for sure.

I keep a few A ALpha torpedos around w/ at least a years age on them. A fantastic smoke if laid to rest properly.

I have to question this. I see this comment often and it seems like it would immediately make sense but if you think about it I think a question comes up....

and that is when the diameter decreases so does the surface area of the wrapper and binder leading to less wrapper and binder along with less filler. I'm no guru at math to calculate the exact amount of difference between a certain amount of fill vs. wrapper and binder and the differences that take effect when the size changes, but somehow I think it's not as prominent as people make it out to be.

Wouldn't the fact that a cigar is a circular shape mean it should retain the same difference in ratio between the circumference and internal space regardless of diameter?

Rev.
Rev, that may very well be true but how would you explain the difference in taste between say a robusto and a PC when the blend is exactly the same?

Many people that are a lot older and wiser than I when it comes to cigars consider the wrapper/binder to filler ratio a major reason for this.

I actually added a little more to my post and worded it a little better.

As for people tasting a difference, well... just the fact that there's less air coming in could make a difference. I'm not saying outright that it's wrong about the wrapper/binder thing, I'm just saying it might not be accurate and there might be other reasons why it tastes different. Size does make a difference in it's own ways, like larger cigars smoke cooler than smaller ones. That likely has an effect on the flavor as well. It certainly is intriguing either way

We are in 100% agreement on that. The best thing about it is the variety. At least we never have to be stuck just smoking one size cigar.
